insurance for a scope

well i just found out something interesting with my contents insurance... i'm with AAMI, and I just insured my new scope. The thing that a lot of people may not know is that you have to add extra insurance for things such as telescopes/cameras (anything that you remove from the home), otherwise if it is destroyed or stolen away from the home it will not be covered for insurance unless you have the away from home insurance. (I had to ask about the away from home insurance otherwise they wouldn't of told me)

it was around the 32$ per $1000 for away from home insurance.

I keep meaning to do my camera and scope for the away from home insurance :ashamed:

Especially after I lost my digital camera last year.. (luckily it was handed in and I got it back).

I know what you mean rowena. Cost me nearly $200 extra :( once I included all the accessories. Ouch!

yeah i also added my 300D on plus the scope! it has now almost doubled our insurance policy :( but better safe then sorry though!

when i start getting expensive accessories i think i will put them down seperately aswell.

Yeah I always have mine insured for everything...yes it cost's a bit...but so does a new scope....

What about "at home" insurance? Would you have to update your contents insurance to cover that as well? something I've often thought about... but never got around to.

I have all my scopes etc covered for accidental breakage as well, so if some clown trips over my tripod and the scope crashes to the ground it is covered. Not cheap mind you.

If you don't specify your 'Expensive' items, then you will only get the maximum payout specified, which for AAMI with a telescope is $1000. again cameras are limited to $1000 total payout, dvd and cd collections are a $1000, so if you have 100 dvd's at $20 each, you should have it insured seperately for $2000 or more!

you need to check your insurance company website/policy for what their limits are.

I got my home contents insurance as well to cover for the scope but could not get a sepcific cover for"valuable items" as all my stuff is second hand and under $1K. Anyway if you guys do have equipment costing more than $1K, I think it is best to get that extra coverage. I for one always worry about leaving my scope outside to cool ;)

i bought my 5" secondhand, for less then a grand, but insured it for its replacement cost, which was over 2k. aami never asked if i bought it new. its more of a how much would it cost you if you had to replace your item from a store (new)? i.e new for old replacement.
