Managed an outing last night to enjoy the loong winter darkness coinciding with a small moon and spotless weather. About 50km W of Dunedin is where Bortle 2 gives way to 1, all still within the city limits. One of my favourite areas to observe from as it's so accessible. Spent 5h at the eyepiece (starting with Comet Lemmon and finishing with the Veil) and took this portrait of the ultimate edge-on around midnight.

3 single shots of 30s. 6D & 14mm ART, then MS ICE & Gimp

Midnight in Dunedin in winter. Remarkable. The Magellanic Clouds really stand out.
