Illuminated reticle eyepiece

I've got an illuminated crosshair 12.5mm eyepiece, but the illumination is too strong to see a star in the centre of the reticle. I used to have another eyepiece similar to this one but experienced the same issue so I replaced the eyepiece. Clearly that wasn't the issue..

Any advice how I can dim the illumination? Or is there a 'proper' way to use these eyepieces?

There should be a brightness adjustment on it somewhere.

Oh yes, I should have mentioned, there is but even when it's on the lowest setting it's far too bright to see any stars

I’ve purchased 2 different brands of 12.5mm illuminated reticle centering eye pieces and they were both rubbish. Couldn’t see a thing out of them and the led light brightness adjuster played up too ( have one to a friend and the other in the bin
Bought an Orion 20mm 70 degree illuminated reticle centering eye piece and it was unbelievable, perfect views of stars ( once focused ) , nice wide field , good eye relief and the red led light was super adjustable, perfect !! I’ve had it for over 3 years and only changed the battery once
They are not cheap but in my experience worth every cent !!!

Thanks Martin, yeah I've seen a few good reviews about the Orion 20mm. Might be worth a try if I don't get anywhere with the eyepiece I have at the moment..

I agree with Martin. The optics in these 20mm eyepieces are surprising good. They are very comfortable to use. I have not had any trouble with the illuminated cross hairs swamping the star field.
I also have an Orion 12mmm plossl illuminated reticule eyepiece. The double cross hair can be properly focused and it has a good quality illuminator which makes all the difference. Again no swamping of the star field when on the lower settings. The battery life on this unit is outstanding.

Maybe dab some white paint on the bulb..I have not tried it but I expect it should work..
