5h of Ha on Boks

Thackeray bok globules 30x600s from last night and the night before so 5h now testing all the mods on the G11. Seeing was best Monday before midnight. Got one sub at 1.37 FWHM as measured in CCDIS. Not sure about the value but it looks pretty tight. I couldn't use the AO the second night. Figuring out why it wouldn't bump the mount. Apparently I was told wrong calibration on the SX group so will try tonight again. Surface wind was a little annoying at that FL though early in the evening both nights. Transparency wasn't excellent. Probably because of the water in the atmosphere. Funny enough the wind kept everything dry so I didn't dew up. Still very noisy but details are starting to come out. It is unlikely that I'll be able to add to it tonight but who knows. Maybe. Fingers crossed.

Your scope is looking a lot like the Hubble there. Does that insulation help much? It probably does. The Honders has a thermal blanket around it as standard.

A nice tight shot of those small Thackery's. What are they anyway - dust?

Shooting at long FL's is a tough gig....looks like you are doing it well :thumbsup: (definitely not a wide field wuss ! :) )

I also like the pier's wall paper....very "astronomical" !!

It does help a lot yeah. If I don't have it focus changes rapidly and I have to adjust quite often. Also the primary will dew up. I still have a dew heater on the alu tub underneath that I leave running all the time. Even when I cover the scope until morning. Keeps everything dry inside.

Small dust/star forming regions. That big one always reminds me of the australian contours.

BTW, I'm noticing horizontal dark lanes shooting off to the right of the three brightest stars. Do you know what's causing that and, more importantly, can you process them out?

I know and I'm not proud of it either believe me. Especially when I do a meridian flip.

Yes I get that occasionally on bright stars. It didn't do it on last night subs but did the night before. Not sure why. I could dither but I don't have the mount up to scratch yet to do dithering. If I get a guide star I stick to it as long as I can.

Looks like that scope is going to an all night party. Like the all over bubble wrap.
The bok globules look interesting up close. So that is what they are. Interesting character that A.D. Thackeray.

I have been wondering how to tame the wires in the wind which was causing gusty jumps in guiding last night for me also. Grumble grumble wind...raspberry.

Thanks Russ. :thumbsup: No the TAK CN-212. Much lighter and easier to use. I did the BOK with the C11 a while ago in better conditions but the TAK is a lot sharper. That C11 shot is processed and sharpened. The CN-212 field is not processed at all. Just stacked.




Thanks Ray. :thumbsup: Yeah a wind gust or even slight breeze will throw your guiding out at long FL. The AO is good to compensate for that even if you guide at 1Hz. Don't take any of my "cable management" as a model for yours. ;)

It's similar to a Mewlon 210 but without a corrector. You can also use it as a newt but I have a 8" GSO which is easier to use.

I'll be interested to see if the AO makes much difference - is it one of the new additions?

I got the AO when that model first came out in 2011. It's the old serial model. Now they're all USB with an internal serial converter. If you pick a bright guide star and can guide over 1Hz it makes a huge difference. You stars are essentially perfect from sub to sub. If you don't dither you'd be hard pressed to see the difference flicking between them if not for the filename change. That's how good the AO works.
