Canon EOS Ra

Hi all,

I hope you're all doing well - I was wondering here who has the Canon Ra with the Canon 85mm f/1.2L USM lens at all? The reason I ask is because I saw an image that looked a little "too" good for an extremely short exposure so was curious as to what sorts of results others have been seeing. By short I mean a 6 second non tracked JPEG shot at ISO 5000 that is as good as any other high quality AP pic I've seen. Is this camera really that much of a game changer? The details on paper certainly look quite nice.

Hard to tell from a low resolution image. He could have stretched it to all heck but wont show any abherations at this resolution. Do you have a link to the full image?

That image is believable. Its showing more colour than I would have thought but 85mm wide open at F1.2 is letting in nearly 71mm of aperture.
At high ISO that would give you a half decent image. But the corners I would expect to show bad coma but perhaps not.

I have an EOS R. Its quite sensitive, not Sony sensitive but quite sensitive. The Ha mod on the Ra lets in more Ha in the deep reds area of the spectrum not full spectrum like some mods.

The image is too small to tell.

Also the original post may show the exif data to confirm?

There's your guy right there. I checked Bilpin NSW light pollution data. It is VERY DARK, with an SQM of 21.80 mag/arcsecond^2 or brightness of 205 microcandela/m2, that would make even a Kodak Box Brownie look good. :D (sorry I had to say that for fun/hyperbole.)
The EOS R performance like some of the current crop of low noise/low dark current cameras is superb. That on top of the darkness of site (only 34 microcandela/m2 away from "perfect") , and the extra Hydrogen Alpha response from the modified sensor will make for a very rich and deep image.

I recall at least two equally wonderful Rho Op images at least one of which was from a DSLR.

Bilpin is just up the street from where I live and yes its reasonably dark depending on which direction you are pointing. Towards Sydney in the east is less dark but towards the west its quite dark.

Not dark site dark but dark enough to get a shot like that.

I might add that Bilpin is around 550 metres altitude if not more. So you would get some extra clarity as that is out of the city mucky air.

Ah, so that's your secret :D Cool coincidence that you're so close.

Out of interest, that area at 206 microcandela/m2 (~Bortle 3) is ~15 times darker than my 2960 microcandela/m2 (~ Bortle 7) backyard....:help: (and that's based on 2015 World Atlas Data). It's 250 times darker based on 2019 VIIRS Radiance data from LightPollutionMap... Yikes!

That's quite factor. Bilpin would be darker than my place but not by a massive amount.
