I found this video very helpful for Deep Sky Stacked and Gimp showing a reasonably simple approach.
I have found the latest Gimp rather good but found this video most helpful and post a link which I hope is helpful for folk starting out like me...let me know your impressions.

Out of curiosity Xelasnave, how do you bring the nebula out so to speak using GIMP?
Im having trouble with the color select tool at the moment.

I generally use photo shop and perhaps the only thing I do that others may not is use the "dodge" tool to lighten selected regions and the "burn" tool to darken say a dust lane to bring it out more.
I think one could do this with masks no doubt.
In the latest Gimp they have dodge and burn tools...

Nice find Alex. GIMP's a great 'FREE' alternative to Photoshop that's very capable of astro processing. I switch between the two all the time.
