If I were talking with another Microbiologist - I can relate, how an "outsider" might be - Lost, confused and totally not understanding what the conversation is all about.
Much is my bewilderment when logging on to many of your topics.
Abbreviations, Shorthand mentions, References to - Settings , charts, books, statements, etc. are most beyond my grasp, and understanding. Maybe in the months ahead (years) I will begin to comprehend - what ya/all are talking about.
IE --- Keyhole region of Eta Carinae /// OR I am getting 3 minute unguided subs which is rather ironic as I downloaded PHD again ..I am glad I tried these 3 minute subs before PHD as I would have given it all the credit.
Just for fun tried 500 gain in HA and although burnt out a little showed so much more in the darker regions, anyways I can use it.

I guess, it would be much like me saying - "Yes it is G+ / Ox+ and no - EMB Growth."

Hi Thomas..don't worry most of what you referred to is stuff I said and you would not be the only person who has no clue what I am talking about.
I think there is a list of terms someplace here..I have to go but when I get back I will explain some of the stuff if someone has not helped by then.
I am still in the bush.

I remember being equally mystified, but believe me, it does come, and being a microbiologist, you're certainly no dolt when it comes to technical subjects! It's just a matter of putting in the time to read the introductory pages on astrophotography.

If it helps, PHD is software (it's called 'press here dummy' - really!) that helps keep your mount pointing in the right direction via a feedback loop with a secondary (guiding) camera that takes shorter exposures than the main camera, typically 2-3 second exposures.

Subs are just images, typically part of a similar set, the idea the subs can all be stacked together to reduce noise and amplify signal.

Gain is just a camera setting like ISO, and HA is Hydrogen Alpha - one of the emission lines of the gasses in nebulae (if you put a filter that only passes Hydrogen Alpha, then you reduce noise once again by excluding light of other frequencies).

Hope that helps some.

So what does 'G+ / Ox+ and no - EMB Growth' mean? I'm curious :-)

Cheers
