View Full Version here: : Jupiter, March 14, getting better
Here's another image from this morning, processed more carefully at 150% size. sadly this takes a long time to do.
I've just finished the red light layer, Io looks nice :-)

That looks really good :P
That's excellent, Anthony!
Io is an actual three-dimensional sphere:scared:
Great stuff
Here's a first cut at the colour result, not quite right yet but I'll fix it tomorrow after I get some sleep :-)

Absolutely stunning!
Do you do your resizing in ppmcentre before registax?

How long were your captures for, Anthony?
How did you manage to keep Io round? Is it a composite?
Mike, I use the resample option in ninox (used to be ppmcentre) before I run registax. Registax does not support resampling of fits files :-(
Each channel is 50 seconds, and I had to compromise the stack slightly by offsetting the red channel 1 pixel to get Io close. It's still not quite right, the offset should be 2 pixels, but it looks ok. It's not a composite.

Everyone else used up all the good superlatives, so how about this old fashioned term for your image, it left me "Gob Smacked"
Very nice Bird, Io looks very spectacular.
Cheers
Thanks guys. I'm going away over the weekend (it's a long w/e in canberra) so I'll take my laptop and keep working on these. Might have something to post when I get back.

Here's my shot of pretty much exactly the same time as Bird's.
Interesting to note they look almost identical, except for the image scale of course due to Anthony's resampling :)

gee they are close!!!
yes, ninox is pretty neat with the upsize =3/2 or whatver the command.
guys, these images are so pleasing to the eye! well done

Given that you guys are shooting through similar atmosphere ( not Mauna Kea !) , similar aperture , similar cameras and similar image processing, the similarity would be expected. To give credit to the work he puts into mirror cooling and image processing, I'd say Anthonys picture ( left ) contains more real information . You guys are clearly working close to the edge of the 'envelope' though.
Just got back from a nice weekend away in the snowy mountains, had a wonderful walk on Sunday in clear blue skies...
Here's the 1837UTC image reprocessed.

lovely detail, for some reason i thought you went to snake valley?
Nope, couldn't make Snake Valley this time - we had this w/e booked in for an annual get-together with some friends.
I'll try and get to the next one though...
cheers, Bird
Here's another image from 11 minutes later, Io has moved appreciably.
21/3: Replaced the original image with the final version.

Another beauty. So many fine details at the poles.
Are you making an animation? (say yes!)
yes! (maybe)
Out of about 20 imaging runs over 2 hours there are really only 2 or 3 where everything is perfect, the others show some thermal motion and seeing problems.

I still reckon the animation would be worth it, even if only 50% are the frames are as good as these posted in this thread.
As I said on CN, it's the best image of Jupiter i've seen outside the Barbados. The fine detail even rivals those from Damian. Good that you're setting the bar now, as it's only 9 weeks until he's back in the barbados! Let him play catchup for once :P
For the next few days (while its rainy) I'll probably keep re-working just the best images from that night to see what I can get, then I'll think about a mass processing run for an animation.
It only takes a slight drop in seeing or thermals to make a big difference in clarity, all the early images showing the shadow transit are nothing special at all.

Thats true Mike, but the difference is, you, Anthony and Zac among others down there post nearly realtime results. We won't see Damians stuff probably for months. What Damian does with a C14 is amazing. His processing skills are legendary, but apparently very time consuming.
Would'nt it be cool to attach one of or DMK cameras to - say a 36" reflector on top of Maun Kea! We should all do that before we cash it in!

fan-bloody-tastic Anthony.
Glenn, thanks - it would be nice to know some of Damian's processing secrets. Maybe it's all revealed in his DVD :eyepop:
