The black lagoon

Once again the core of the Milky way is rotating into view....along with its cast of beautiful and bright southern nebulae.

I managed to get a tad more M8 h-alpha data...with the grand plan to make this a colour vista "real soon now"....but with clouds /rain and a waxing Moon this may take a while...

What surprised me about the data here are the ionization fronts within M8. Hinted at elsewhere, but rarely so obvious as seen here (yes, I did push the contrast a tad :D)

No AO used on this...I can use the external guide , or AO but not both, due the back focus of the corrector. The seeing was good, but I've had better.





Ta. I rather like the ionization boiling off the feature at 6 o'clock in the image....not often caught.



Depends on what you mean by exceptional...my usual is around 3 arc sec...much of the data was about 2 arc sec... That said the optics I'm using are not too shabby :)

Excellent local contrast and quite sharp to boot, well done Peter.

Hate to be that guy, but is it a bit flat? Seems like there's lots of local contrast but the global contrast is missing.

The"bones" are there...but DM is inscrutable....and there is always the Hart-Pugh factor :help:

Hi Peter -
there is no doubt that you have maybe the sharpest optics in Australia
and all the more remarkable because you weren't able to use adaptive optics
even though you have the AO-X and A0-8T systems.
