This galaxy is classified as a flocculent spiral galaxy and is located approximately 26-35 million light years away in the constellation Leo.

NGC 3521 has a reasonably large extended halo formed from interactions with previous galaxies in the past. Some of that structure is visible in this image, but there's much more faint stuff to be found if one was inclined to go deep on it.

Unfortunately for me there's a giant eucalyptus tree on a neighbouring property behind my observatory, which means much of the north sky is obscured. I can image this one but only for a few hours a night, only able to go about 1hr past the meridian.

This image is an integration of just over 10hrs of LRGB.

Gear used: Mach 1, 8" TS ONTC Newtonian, ASI183mm Pro, Astrodon E-series II

Big one can be found here (https://www.astrobin.com/full/26lsjx)

Another great shot, with those nice little background galaxies showing through. A nice one to add too your collection.

What a brilliant image....It would be nice to see some more surrounding field to give the image a little more perspective, but that's a minor quibble at best.

A remarkable result either way

Thanks Peter :)

Yeah, I normally would have framed this differently. I have an automated rotator, but I don't trust it to run unattended without ripping cables out (I really should resolve that issue) so this was rotated 90 degrees from how I actually wanted it. I don't really like portrait-oriented galaxy images so I just decided to go for a square crop.

Nicely done Lee , Congratulations.

Lots of galaxies in that area of the sky. I was imaging M88 on Sunday night with my Edge 11.

Cheers

Lovely image Lee, especially at the lower resolution. Colour is very pleasing too. A stand out example for sure.

Thanks Rob! :) There sure is a lot of lovely galaxies in that area. I'm quietly hopeful that the neighbours eucalyptus tree will have an accident (and not land on my observatory) to make imaging them easier.

M88 would be a good fit on the Edge 11.

Thanks Paul :-)
