Which digital slr to buy?

I am looking at brand new cameras with warranty and all that stuff.

So far the cannon EOS range, (30D) etc looks like the ticket. Can anyone give me the ups and downs of this sort of camera?

I have done my dollars enough with 35mm film on a cruddy old minolta, and I am not prepared to go the full ccd camera yet.

Do you need to spend that much as it sounds as though you are on your way to a dedicated astro camera;) . I dont know what others think and I have not used one but what about a 400d:shrug: :) ..10 meg some good features, body only a little over $1000 and put the change in a draw for the day you go CCD dedicated cooled with guiding chip camera:D .

Yes I was looking at a 400D today at Harvey Norman. I have no idea how it compares to a 30D.

I am not interested at all in normal daytime photography. I have cameras that will do for that. I just want a good astro-camera, and I'm sick of wasting my time and money on second best, or "near enough that'll do".

If you want the best, get the 5D or 5DH.

I suspect that the image quality from the 400D would be improved over the 30D, whether the noise levels are as good I'm not sure. The 30D is a more robust camera with a solid chassis and far less plastic, but the 400D will be lighter and may be better suited for that reason.

if its for astrophotography, i would go for one of the 100series over the 30D,

They are basicly the same, the only major difference is that the 30D has a magnesium frame, and some other features that you wouldnt use at all for astrophotography, just for conventional photography.

If you are gonna use it it soley for astrophotography you might want to consider buying a filter modified version such as one of the hutech's or get it modded. it will majorly increase the sensitivity on many astro objects.
