What is your favorite type of deep sky objects?

I can only have one? I chose PN but a multi choice would have Gx checked as well.

I nearly gave two choices but decided to make it one.

Galaxies. The more distant the better. Those ones that have that ancient yellow dusty glow to them.

Nebulae No1 for me  But all DSO categories are good.

Nebula mostly for me, followed closely by multiple galaxies in the FOV. But
generally I'm a anything type of guy.

That's a very hard question, Glen. I love them all, for different reasons. I chose open clusters because of their instant visual beauty and extraordinary variation, whether by naked eye (such as Pleiades and Hyades), as a bino object (many of the Collinders), or through a scope (eg the amazing OC's in Puppis). Open clusters are accessable at any time of the month through any sized scope. They are wonderfully available, and often display beautiful colour variation.
Some of the other targets I love for the concept, especially galaxies, galaxy clusters, globs and planetaries. But let's face it, many look very similar, and can be very disappointing in a small aperture scope or under light polluted skies.

I read this question as "What is your favourite type of Deep Sky Object" for observing because that's what I do at my scope, I don't capture images, etc.
If I had interpreted the "thrust" of the question differently, ie "which DSO's fascinate me the most" my answer would have likewise been different.
I was going to put nebula originally but realised that apart from a very small number (Orion, Carina, etc) I much prefer to look at magnificent images of them so I can see them revealed with all their beauty of form and colour displayed.
I have chosen Open Clusters for much the same reasons as Rod listed, except that he worded his explanation better than I would have.
;)
I do want to add that I am a BIG fan of observing Globular Clusters - I love them!

Yes I meant "What is your favourite type of Deep Sky Object for observing?"

I love (and voted for) globs, but I might switch to galaxies with a bigger scope :P

You could have really offered a sixth choice:
* All the above
For imaging I voted for galaxies but if it's visually then I would have to include open clusters as well.

There is something about the thrill of the hunt for galaxies. Then convincing myself I can make out details!!! Delusional ?

PN..not allways a lot to look at ..but fun to find

Many Nebulae show heaps of detail visually, even quite faint ones.
I love them all, but have to say Nebulae are my choice.

Definately Galaxies for me.
I am yet to image one, but geez I love looking at them through the 12".
Individual Galaxies or Clusters of them . . . gimmee more :P

It is hard for me to go past a good globular cluster...but heck, I like em all!

It looks like PN are not popular.
Here are the brightest 27 PN in order south of declination +55:
NGC 6853=M27, NGC 3242, NGC 7293, NGC 7009
NGC 6572, NGC 3918, NGC 7662, NGC 7027
NGC 6210, NGC 6720=M57, NGC 6826, NGC 2392
IC 418, NGC 2440, NGC 1535, NGC 6818
NGC 5189, NGC 5882, NGC 1360, NCC 2867
NGC 3132, NGC 6302, NGC 3587=M97, NGC 5315
NGC 650/651=M76, Abell 21, IC 4406

I chose open cluster for thier accessability in my 8" scope. generally you dont have to sit there staring at them for ages trying to resolve detail either... that said, if i had more aperture i would have picked galaxies probably. I like all the sky has to offer tho :)

Planetary nebulas do it for me.
Some are bright enought to be observed from the suburbs, they come in different shapes (M57 vs NGC 5189 vs M27), they can be quite ghostly (Helix, Spare Tyre in Grus, Shapely1), they can show colour (Blue Planetary), and some of them show inner structure (Eskimo, Saturn Neb, Ghost of Jupiter) which make a nice reward for spending time and teasing it out. Then of course there is the thought of the planets that exist / existed around the star
and that it is possibly Sol's eventual fate.

I've got to agree with you there Andrew. Planetary nebs are the go.

Nebs for me. I just love looking at them.

It was a photo finish between Nebula and Open Clusters, as Globular Clusters are dim in my 8" scope, and I''ve never seen a Planetary Nebula. I've only ever seen one Galaxy, and even then I had to ask this forum if that 'large smudge of frosted glass' really was M31 Andromeda.
Orion and Carina are the first things I look for, so I chose Nebula.

I voted Globs, but Galaxies would be up there if I just had more aperture.....

Planetary Nebulae and galaxies. Spend most of my eyepiece time hunting them down.
Open clusters - I love the beauty of all the stars grouped together. I can observe OCs in my heavily light polluted back yard, but when at a dark sky site the WOW factor goes up exponentially!

Nebulae rule! :D
They are absolutely gorgeous through a widefield eyepiece and filter!
