Probably 6 months or more ago I read a book that made a number of assertions which were new to me. For the life of me I cannot recall which book I read that discussed this. Not helping my recall is the problem that I moved and my library is in a million boxes.
The discussions that I remember concerned the synthesis of certain difficult compounds that initially took huge effort with a small yield. But over time these same compounds (using the same techniques!) have become easier and easier and with higher yields. The other part of the discussion I remember concerned fluctuations in the measurements of constants (such as the speed of light) that appear to cluster depending on the time period of the measurements. i.e., everyone measuring a particular constant came up with similar results across the world, but at some future date the results all cluster around some slightly different value. In either situation, if these assertions are true it is very interesting and unexpected.
If anyone remembers what author/book brought up these points I would be very grateful!
