Hi everyone
Many years ago I found out about this NASA website where you could discover comets in astronomical images taken by the SOHO telescope.
https://sungrazer.nrl.navy.mil/
It took a while but I found my first kreutz comet in 2013. That took a great deal of effort however because even though the comets are plentiful and easy to spot the competition to be the first to report an object is fierce. Comets typically get reported within a few seconds of 3 consecutive images becoming available.
I took a break then for 6 years from comet hunting but last year I decided to go through the SOHO C2 camera archives and look for comets that had been missed. I was able to identify a further 16 comets, mostly Non-group and Meyer comets. That took my total to 17 and I am just waiting on an 18th confirmation.
I also went through the Cor-2A and Cor-2B camera archives for the SECCI telescope. While I found many objects they had all been reported previously.
I have also gone through the SECCI H1 camera archive for a number of years and have about 40 objects identified. It remains to be seen whether any of these are previously unidentified comets.
17 comets thus far is a pleasing result albeit I don't get to name any of them :(
Having become something of a comet hunting Jedi (I used the Force) I would like to apply my skills and tools developed to other images.
is there another free repository of cometary images taken in sequence eg every 10 minutes, hourly etc which I could examine to try and find further comets or even potentially asteroids?
Hoping someone can help
Peter
