Decided to call it done on this one after 19hrs.

I feel like there's probably a nicer looking image to be had if I didn't push the faint dust so hard, but that faint stuff makes the field more interesting, if less aesthetically pleasing.

Anyway, I don't think this is the nicest looking image I've produced, but it's a reasonable effort on an interesting target.

Small version with more capture details here (https://www.astrobin.com/h27meg/)

Big version here (https://www.astrobin.com/full/h27meg/) (recommended)

Full version here (https://www.astrobin.com/full/h27meg/?real=&mod=) (not really worth it)

Great shot Lee, you've managed to get a very smooth result on the IFN in the region. I do enjoy that photobombing galaxy in the bottom right corner ;)

Really great job Lee, a most interesting field this one, perhaps unique even?! :confuse3:  It's a cool shape, suits its name. I can understand why you've had enough, sometimes close enough is good enough, the extra effort and time to make any real difference is just not worth it...meeeah, ok, next one please!...this is fun, I don't have to do anything :2thumbs: :D

Smoke is rolling back in.... cough, cough....

Thanks Colin :-) Yeah, that little galaxy is nice. I also like the cluster of faint fuzzies between that one and NGC 1313.

I could have pushed the large scale structures harder and it would have looked even smoother (as did the original L data I posted) but though it's noisier I think it looks a bit more real this way.

Cheers Mike :-) Yeah, it's a very interesting field but personally I don't find it terribly great looking. I was going to go for 20hrs, but when I added it up and found I had 19 I decided one more night wasn't worth it... I've moved on to prettier objects now ;-)

Ask and ye shall receive! Though you may not receive what you were expecting...

A beautiful galaxy photo Lee.

A new object for me.

Great detail and colour.

I love the background dust/gas.

Hello Mike.

Good to hear from you...hope you are well.

Hey...you expect too much from me...I am a mere photographer, not an astronomer!...please forgive me.

I am slowly getting there though.....I no longer confuse The Rings of Saturn with Uranus! ;)

Looking forward to seeing more of your amazing astrophotos.

Take care.

Ross.

Lovely image Lee. It’s what shines forth from the dust (the interaction/counterpoint) that makes this work for me.

 on ya Ross ...Lee's images are getting me through this bush fire smoke fiasco, he (and others) is unwittingly conducting an astroimagers stir crazy prevention program, no joke  :D

At first I suspected that the faint nebulosity was tidal tails from the gravitationally disrupted galaxy, and perhaps some of it really is, but on downloading and further stretching your magnificent image, I can see that the nebulosity is much to general to be fully explained by tidal tails.

Superb.

Best,
Mike

My version looks dark compared to yours. I like yours better. I am going to take a look at mine now.

Thanks Mike :-) I'm definitely an astrophotographer rather than an astronomer so the details of NGC 1313's formation and the dust in this field is beyond me. From what I've read though, NGC 1313 is believed to be a field galaxy, that is, gravitationally alone (source: Wikipedia, APOD) so I don't think they have a good explanation for it's morphology or the dust in the field.

I missed your one when I was digging around for examples, Paul. Aesthetically, I definitely prefer yours to mine. I got carried away with a multiscale processing technique that enabled me to bring the dust out a lot more than I've been able to in the past. I blended it back in with a more traditionally processed image because it was looking pretty over baked at the end, but it's still pushed pretty hard. I'm happy to have brought out the dust, but I don't think it looks nice... again I prefer yours.

Thanks Tim! Definitely an interesting target :-)

As usual great detail! The image is however a tad noisy, the trade-off to pay when working at high sampling
Great image thou

A really wonderful image.

Did you do noise reduction early on in the processing? Its a dim galaxy but the colour speckle noise could be dealt with dust and scratches in PS easily.

Greg.
