I mentioned this in the Canberra smoke thread, but given the widespread nature of the smoke problem, I am putting it here as well.

Good air purifiers work, and can rid home of smoke, in my experience.

I suggest you buy a good air purifier, with a HEPA filter. I bought one in early December after coughing through night's here. They do work well. Mine clears a 35 square metre area easily.* It has a max air flow rate of 236 m3/hr.
Mine is an Ionmax Breeze model that I bought from Kogan.
It is quiet. Replacement filters are available, but I believe they are suppose to last for 12,000hrs, but maybe not that long in this soup I live in. Claims to trap particulates down to 0.3 microns.
I had family staying over Christmas and it helped alot. I even bought a small version for my car.

Link here, but note, not surprisingly they are sold out:

But you might find them elsewhere, like appliances online. Not cheap toys, these things work. I paid about $270. There are much larger systems available if you search for them.

However, for maximum effectiveness you must keep doors and windows closed. If you have ventilation fans in bathrooms and toilets, and laundry areas these must be closed when not in use, by closing the door to that area. Not all ventilation fans have vanes/baffles that close when not in use, thus smoke can get in that way.

I have mine in the lounge room during the day, and it keeps the lounge and kitchen area nice and fresh. At night I move it to the master bedroom, and it runs on low setting all night. No sore throats. I have a spare filter set on hand but so far the original is still performing well.

PS: Don't assume your home air conditioner system will remove smoke particulates. Most Air Con filters are simply dust filters, and cannot filter out particulates at the micron level. There are some very good air con filter systems, and these are found on newer high end systems, which feature allergen filtration like the high end Panasonic system.
