Takahashi Color

When did Takahashi change from the green to the duck egg blue colour and why? Looks horrid. It is no longer distinguishable from the Starbase gear.

I see no problem with this, it matches my duck egg blue Safari suit perfectly....:lol:

That is a shame, it is a bit like Canon changing there long L glass from white to maybe yellow or even black.
I agree that green colour was sign of the Tak IMHO

Before Takahashi used green they were grey. The new blue is nice enough, just different. The only issue is matching the finder scope bracket and tube clamp in the same colour as the telescope.

Yes. The only issue is they don’t guarantee what colour your going to get, it’s whatever is in stock at the time. Which I think is pretty poor on their behalf.
So if you spend thousands of dollars on new mount, scopes etc, they could come in a mix match of colours.

I had this issue on a few occasions Darren. In particular, I ordered the last PM-1 mount Tak made which had the blue finish and the planet fork set assuming it was blue as well but in fact was Tak green. I complained about this but was told that that Tak never made any with the blue finish and that was that. So, I just went up to the local Mitre 10 and took a part off the fork set and had it scanned. I bought a one litre tin of Taubmans Endure Ultra semi-gloss enamel which wasn't cheap but turned out to be a perfect match colour and gloss wise. I did the same thing earlier last year and had a tin of Tak green made up. I've painted a couple off CAA's and finder stalks to match the OTA's and have been very happy with the results. There doesn't seem to be any residual paint smell after a couple of weeks. I found that dabbing the paint on with a small stiff brush worked best rather than brush strokes.

I've attached a pic of my Mewlon 180 with the R & P focuser which was originally green as well as the planet fork set which was also Tak green.

Agreed Steve - the best way by far to replace Tak paint is stippling it on with either a stiff round brush as you mnetioned, or a foam applicator (better results). Also, DEFINITELY oil based enamel - acrylic just won't cut it.

I recently repaired a Tak FS-78 - oddly enough, Hans' former example - that someone butchered (super glued on Vixen finder base and so on list of deplorable work I had to remedy) and now you cannot tell it was done, back to as good as when Hans had it. (including putting on the 6x30 finder I got from Hans years ago that originally was on it)

Must admit that the new Tak blue is quite nice. Far better than the previous ghastly baby bathtub green!
Of course, you can always do what I did & replace the original green with something much nicer! :lol::lol::lol:
