I've been working on the Horsehead nebula recently and I was flicking through data taken a month ago and another set taken over the last few days and noticed a new star and a brightening star.

In the first two images you can see there is a star that didn't exist a month ago but does now. It's in the same position on Sunday night and Tuesday night so it isn't a transient object. If I stack last months images and this months it does become more apparent. There is also another star near the bright star in the SE corner than has a brightening and dimming star. It is apparent over a month long period but doesn't change over several days.

The next two show a star that has a significant brightness change. This star along with another one I found may be a Cepheid Variable. I haven't followed up on this particular star but I found another one not shown here that doesn't change over the course of a night but does over two. It shows virtually no change from Nov 27th to Dec 22nd but a brightness difference from Dec 22nd to Dec 24th.

I may have to revisit this region another night to see if there are any other developments!

Colin,
Have you plate solved the images?
Simbad should be able to tell you whether or not these stars are variables or...

Sorry Colin, I can not relate the first 2 images to the next 2 images. Can U help me to comprehend?

Bob,
I think they are separate fields in the same area - no relationship.

In the first two shots I have that missing star in mine taken a couple of years ago.

Thanks Ken. I finally found the stars.

Well done Colin. Even though I was told, it took me a long time to find what U had found for yourself.
