G'day. does a bartinov mask need to be close to the end of the lens or can it be on the dew sheild or lens hood?

That's a really good question Poider...

On my SCT I had one right up on the corrector plate; on my main AP scope my Bhatinov sits on the end of the dew shield, the one I'm about to order for my Vixen 130 Newt won't sit on either really coz... it's a newt...

I get excellent focus results either way...

So, my best guess is no... it doesn't matter but, I'll be interested to see what other more knowledgeable folk have to say on the matter...

Cheers

I actually printed one then sticky taped it to the insert from a coles shopping bag and cut it out with a stanley knife, it is a little bit larger than the lens hood on the 100mm ed doublet but the only chance i had to test was half hour last nigh and it actually seemed to work, It is on the end of the hood so i will let you know when i get a better opportunity.

Hmmm, you've given me food for thought there...

Where did you get the 'print' pattern for the template please?

Try here for a mask generator,

I too have one on the corrector cut out of black binder cover with a stencil knife and one on the end of the dew shield of each refractor made out of line. Each works fine at any distance.
