The Rosette Nebula in Monoceros

This is a Hubble palette [SII, H alpha, OIII] image of one of the most beautiful and photographed nebulas in the night sky. We’ve all seen a hundred or more versions of this image; however, it is still a pleasure imaging it for oneself. I am sorry if this image does not break new ground.

Technical Details:

Televue NP127is Refractor at f/5.2, Astrodon 3-nm SII, Ha, and OII filters, QSI 683wsg camera. Mount: EQ8. Imaged from suburban Sydney.

SII: 42 x 14 minutes = 10 hours, H alpha: 54 x 14 minutes = 13 hours, OIII: 21 x 14 minutes = 5 hours.

Software: Nebulosity 4, PHD 2, PixInsight, Lightroom and Photoshop.

I believe no one should ever have to apologise for producing an image, even if it's there's so many around. Those that don't want to see them can just move on as far as I'm concerned. So go for it. :)

I like the colour in the image, bit in my opinion I think you might be able to do a reprocess that improves it further. I think you've used a deconvolution and perhaps hit it a bit too hard (some stars look like they have faint dark rings on them). And some process (noise reduction?) has made it a bit soft or plastic looking if you look at the large version.

Also, not required, but my personal preference to to remove the magenta from the stars if possible.

The image shows that you've got some very good data, so I hope this feedback helps in some way.

"Pretty freaking cool", I normally prefer to use proper formal English, but I like that one so much I will add it to my social media repertoire.

Perhaps someone clever needs to write a PFC script to run under PixInsight? Take away all of the effort so that every image turns out PFC?

Probably one day someone will train an AI neural net to take care of the creative aspects of astro-image processing.

+1 Very cool shot. The whole field looks great. I would dial down the noise reduction a tad and keep some, this way you'd show a lot more fine details. :thumbsup:
