Hi All,

What a down pour that was, just now. There were a few hail stone in there to, quiet small mind but there none the less. This is the first time I have seen water going uphill on my street, aside from flying uphill too. It was enough wind and rain power to topple fully loaded bins in the street. Thank God, it was a short stint. I just wish I had a tank to catch all that water.

Edited: Sorry got sidetracked there a bit, but wanted to discuss the strange weather pattern we are having. I have been monitoring the weather charts and it seems like we are seeing a lot of cloud formation over central NSW. If you look at the weather map satelite loops you will see what I mean. Is this linked to global warming or Elnino? What are the thoughts out there. Is there really so much water in the central NSW to make these clouds?
I am no expert on how clouds form etc but where the heck is the water coming from when there is a drought?

Regards
Fahim

Yep, I think Iemmas going to have to lift his game. Even the safe seat of Newcastle is under threat, though by independents. Newcastle TV station NBN will have a "hotseat" face off between all the representatives tonight.

NSW Labor is pretty much the same as the Libs anyway. No great loss IMHO.

Appolgies my aim was not to entertain politics but to report on the extreme weather we had today and the wasted water. More from an enviromental perspective and to open a dialogue about weather this is the possible effects of Global warming or Elnino. Got a bit sidetracked there.
RB, you can lock the thread if you wish. But I have amended my OP to reflect the discussion i wished aimed for.

I was watching the news at the weekend and they had some footage of the rain up north lately. I said to my wife the perhaps they should look at building a pipeline to carry the water from there down to here...actually, maybe we should construct a series of canals joining the wetter areas of the planet to the drier ones? Does this ring a bell with anyone?;) Maybe we could call them canali...people observing us through a telescope might think we are a dying planet.

I heard on the radio that the guy who designed the harbour bridge also had plans for a pipeline/river from up north to down south.

Sounds like a good idea to me.

Victoria is in terrible trouble with water.......Our catchments at this time last year were around 56 percent at the moment 34 percent and no decent rain in sight. Phase 4 water restrictions in May :mad2::mad2::mad2:

Water for Sydney is not the problem; water for the country is not the problem the problem is found within the way Government moves in response to the most active voices in the community:) , which are only offering a solution that feathers their nest;) . Desalination is a stupid uneconomic response offered by those selling desalinators:) ..may be a good solution for them but it leaves the problem but subtracted resources from dealing with the real problem. I though about the underwater dam idea to replace the prospect of water tanks at every house, but it will get no following because the desalinator people will be there to offer reasons why that won’t work yet their idea will.seems to work OK for Hong Kong by the instalation of collection dam using a cove...But thats selling folks I expect them to do such:) ...fair enough:) ...but why accept a costly solution that will cost more as the years go by and one that relies on greater consumption of energy as opposed to ideas that reduce our energy comsumption. The water available to Sydney for example is boundless yet we are lead to believe the opposite;) . Why:shrug: . Because the deal has been done;) ...blind Freddy could see it if he bothered to look:) . Does it not make you wonder that the last thing the last Premier did before leaving office was to run over seas to fix this problem with a salepresentation by the desalinators crew????When the desalinators are in place ask yourself why you stood by and let it happen without a wimper...but don’t complain if you did nothing when water becomes as expensive as petrol given that it at that point has to be produced rather than collected and stored.
Alex:) :) :)

Ask your political representative at the next public meeting why? and consider the answer in light of the vested interest proposition.

Nature is providing us with what is needed but it seems we wish to just dump it into the ocean and then recycle it. It just does not make sense. I think a good oppertunity would have been when the build the motorways to incorporate some way to capture and pipe the water.

I saw this program on Discovery or NG about how the Dutch or Norwigens ( i think) build a wall along the ocean to stop flooding, and then developed the idea when they saw enviromental impacts. Now they are building houses that would float in a flood. This is for areas that why would wantonly channel flood water to and sacrifice. In order to protect the larger community. Surely Australians could engineer a solution to resovle or drought issues.

Like Alex says the problem is not the lack of water, but the way its captured, managed and used.
