As most of you know I am waiting for my new big FLI 35mm format CCD camera to arrive for use on my ASA N12 Astrograph but while I wait I have had the priveledge of assisting Chris Willington in processing the first Aussie ASA full colour image - that of Orions Sword using "his" ASA N12.

We have been working on it for some time (mostly him of course) and it is great to see the final product released.

To see the final result is very satisfying as it clearly shows the power of this scope was clearly not over stated, in fact I probably under estimated it :eyepop: :eyepop: :eyepop:

You can see the first two images from Chris's ASA N12 here - Warning: prepare to have your chin hit the floor!

http://www.pbase.com/strongmanmike2002/asa_n12_images (http://www.pbase.com/strongmanmike2002/asa_n12_images)

Make sure you click on "original" size under each image to really check out the quality of this beast of a scope - just amazing!

Ed: My impending ProLine11002 is the FLI equivalent (but reportedly even better) of Chris's STL11002 camera so while I am fast running out of patience waiting for it, I am also bloody excited!

Ah yes but then there is the ASA N12 too = approx AU$13000 (landed at your door) the you need the few accessories necessary to mate them together, the filters, the high quality mount, the high performance computer necessary for the large files etc etc...tis an expensive hobby if you want the big fish. Ouch!

Those are mind blowing images. And a mind shattering budget. I think i spoted at least 4-5 tiny galaxies in that shot, well they look like little tine galaxies. Thats awesome. Where they heck to you guys find the money for this stuff, i hope your making money selling those pictures.

Yeh I agree, the square stars and random star spike internal refections are easily over looked with time, you'll see. It will be hard for an impending APO user I know, just take it image by image, it's called diffraction spike de-sensitization :P

Yes indeed fantastic. Yes also very expensive, however compared to a RCOS 12.5 inch
http://www.rcopticalsystems.com/12inch.html
base price over 17 grand US its a bargain. Its also FAR faster then the RCOS, allowing much wider field imaging in a fraction of the time. Thus if I won lotto Id go for the ASA rather then the RCOS, and plonk it on a Losmandy Titan mount.
