G’day, just a quick question, I have an old 60mm 600mm refractor and want to better my viewing, would it be better to upgrade the focal length or the aperture?
E.G. from 60mm x 600mm to 100mm x 600mm
Or. from 60mm x 600mm to 60mm x 900mm

For visual, aperture every time, 120 even better. One rider though, your 60mm x600 is f/10, so probably doesn't show too much false
colour on bright objects, but a 100mm x 600 is f/6 and will most likely show more colour, so a 100mm x900 or so [f/9] would be better,
but becomes quite a large scope compared to your little 60mm.

:) I went from a 60mm f15 on eq2 made by ( imported from Japan ) Meade in 1977 that I loved and used for years and when I upgraded to a Celestron 102mm f10 achromat on eq3 mount I was amazed at the difference in views .

The C102 showed everything better in leaps and bounds and done me well for a decade then sold it . I liked that scope so much I grabbed a Saxon version here in the classifieds for $370 and its a great performer as well .

Yes one of these is a good step up for little outlay .To show you what is acheaveable if you are patient and watch the classifieds here is the newer Saxon 102mm f10 achro on a Vixen Supar Polaris I got here for $400 so both the scope and mount were only $770 , great quality and value .

Good luck on what ever you choose . Be patient and enjoy your 60mm until then .

Brian.

edit: , the tripod was free from here as it was broken , an easy fix , its a Meade HD field tripod and very solid ( now )

 I thought I would show you what is capable if you watch the classifieds here and are fast , first up this scope is the same as the one in the last post taken a few months ago , this photo was last month .

I grabbed a ED 80 crayford for <$50 , the GSO alt/az mount for < $70 , 7x50 white finder $30 and a rattle can of off white from Repco $12 to paint the counter cell ( up front ) to match the new focuser and finder , a totally different scope for ! $160 ;) , yes the classifieds are your friend  .

Yes they all needed a bit of work but thats what makes it all the more interesting ,,, learning . Oh yes they were all brought with my full knowledge of their problems , the people here are awesome and up front :thumbsup::thumbsup: .

Watch the classifieds mate .
