Are you aware that our government considers fuel that is in tankers that are on the way here to be part of our "reserves"? This is fuel that we don't actually have yet. But wait, it gets better, if there's a problem bringing in fuel due to "instability" in the region then there are plans to ship our crude to Singapore for processing!

Is the 3 weeks based on the current grossly inefficient ways of using fuel (e.g. cars with only 1 person in them, trucking goods where rail service is available etc), or on using only what's actually needed when needed? I expect with the latter reserves would last significantly longer than 3 weeks.

If you think about it how can you have a larger reserve, there, here, anywhere unless you build hundreds of massive storage facilities all over the country

We in Australia had such facilities,as well as refineries,but governments over the years have sold them off and they have been demolished and turned into real estate.
It was considered cheaper to import oil than to manufacture oil her in Australia.
Whe I came to Australia nearly 48 years ago Australia had nearlya dozen oil refineries and a couple of oil fields,I am not sure but I don't think we have one now.

If we want help from the USA with our fuel suppies,the you join my guys in the gulf of Hormuz with military ships and aircraft.

Before the second world war Australia was send iron billets to Japan which the promptly sent back such metal as bombs and ships and aircraft to attack Australia and allies.

In the US I believe they store reserves in underground caverns.
In Australia we don’t have to worry about that.
Because we don’t have any reserves!

Yep, aware of this particular issue but when you look at it from a strategic point of view where sc******. If things heat up our Army, Navy and Air Force will be very much grounded. US holds a strategic supply just to prevent such a scenario.

Well if the poo hits the fan it will be like what happened in England 1939, when no private citizens were allowed to drive vehicles and all vehicle fuel tanks had to be drained and handed to the Armed Services.

I should seriously look at buying an electric vehicle I think.

Found this some months ago while researching the history of the Petroleum Operator trade within the Australian Army. It is very poignant as it reflects the same concern as today. If I read it correctly back in 1976 Oil refinerys held about 17 weeks/ 199days of processed fuels way above what we have now. It is a good reference to gage the the effect of federal political decisions over the proceeding 40 plus years.

Quite true, Alex, but it doesn't help matters when we are run by "career" politicians whose only interest is getting themselves (and their party) elected. It's been a long time since any of them have shown any concern for the long-term well-being of this country.

Sure I agree. But we elect them. It is clear that anything they " stand for" is due to lobby pressure or inducement.
What we need is a company who supplies storage tanks who is prepared to put in the hard yards involved in lobbying to give us what we need.
The attitude to the poor and jobless is the first thing that should change but who is going to lobby for that?
Anyways in spite of our politicians things are not too bad...so good in fact apppathy rules.
