APOD today (http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap050420.html), shows Barnards Loop, around Orion.

If you're on broadband, check out the large version (click on the pic). It's 3 meg, but it's simply stunning.. the horsehead, flame, orion, all visible. And all those background stars!

What a shot.

I think I've just found my new desktop wallpaper. That image is amazing. Is Barnard's Loop supposed to be connected to the Orion Nebula, as some kind of outer ring? That's what it looks like.

Its also interesting that theres a large mass of stars up in the left corner while the rest of the area is uniformally populated..

Hey ving, the horsehead is there. Blow it up a bit and you'll see it.

Nice to see what Barnard's loop actually looks like! I have looked at it in my SkyAtlas 2000 many times, but seen no sign in the sky. Has anyone else ever managed to see it, other than by astrophotography?

You would need one wopper of a wide field and a lot of aperture to do that I think Rodstar and Big scope and short focal lenth don't go together I don't think ?

Hi All
Parts of Barnards loop are visible in Hector. You need to use a UHC filter for the best results. The OIII is to harsh to show it well as it cuts out to much light. Orion is filled with low surface brightness nebula.

Hi All
The cluster that Comet Hunter located in the top left hand corner is NGC2194. A rather rich open cluster that appears slightly flattened.
You can see another cluster closer to Betelgeuse. this cluster has a slight purple tinge in the photo and is NGC2141. The galaxy NGC2119 can also just be seen in thesame region.
Also visible at a quick glance in the photo is M78 a reflection nebula next to a large open cluster that lies along barnards loop near m78
