Astrofest 2019 - LMC

Added a few hours to a field I did at astrofest 2015. Bit deeper and smoother with better details and less noisy and just the right amount of green. :)

Wow Marc, the full size image is a stunner.:eyepop::thumbsup:

I copied the full res file into PS CC and touched up the Micro Contrast with a Topaz labs plug-in (Topaz Detail) and it really lifted the image off the page, without spoiling the natural look and feel to this stunning region.:)

Hi Marc

Lets see if this works.:)

I copied the high res jpg into PS CC (OMG) and di a full res 1024x1024 crop and saved it as a JPG.

I then used Topaz Detail, Micro Contrast I set to Default on a new Layer and then set that Layer to 67% so only 67% of the effect was active and saved it as the 2nd JPG here.

Hope you can see the subtle difference.:)

Meric beaucoup George. :thumbsup: That's one field. I offset it to see bit of the LMC bar and hadn't planned for a mosaic but you're right. 4 panels would cover the whole area nicely. Will do. :)

Thanks a lot Greg. :thumbsup: I bayer drizzled x2. That helps a lot with undersampling with the oldQ/QHY8 @ 7.8um ~3asp so you get a lot nicer stars by doing this way provided you keep your focus and guiding super tight.

It's super easy. Here's the PI project files in a zip with my settings. Just replace source frames by your own and the directory structure and folders to suit. I always use the same flow.

CosmeticCorrection > Debayer > StarAlignment > ImageIntegration > DrizzleIntegration

Very nice Marc! I'd love to see mosaic once it's done. If this teaser is anything to go by it'll be epic ;)

Bayer Drizzle certainly does help, I've got a 3x3 bayer drizzle going right now! I wouldn't generally recommend a 3x3 though, apart from needing at least 50 frames to get good sampling (otherwise it can leave some nasty things) I'm doing it purely to fix up some star shapes.

I've found that even if your sampling is pretty good, thinking here of using your QHY8 with CN-212 or 8" F/4, bayer drizzle at 1x1 sampling still helps improve things from just a standard stack. It doesn't increase resolution but helps give a more natural placement of colour and should (in theory) give a more accurate PSF and be closer to what a monochrome sensor would in RGB images.

One of your best. The Tarantula looks superb, but the overwhelming feeling of stars - the thing being in a galaxy, not just glowing gas - is preserved.

Never tried on oversampled data but will have to try when I use the QHY8 with the CN-212 I'm at 0.61 asp. The bayer matrix is a killer for details.

Nice to see so much of the Tarantula. As I mentioned in Bart’s shot, pictures like thes really show up the advantages of a nice wide field. Colours and definition are good. All in all a top shot
