RS232 to RJ45 instead of a USB to Serial Adaptor

Hello everyone, just wondering if I can use a cable with an RS232 on one end and an RJ45 on the other end instead of the RS232 to USB serial adaptor to connect my Celestron Nexstar SE8 to my laptop?

Delivery from Ukraine can be a bit slow.

Does your laptop have a serial port?


If not, then you do need a usb to RS232 adapter.

Hi Philip, Looks like I'm getting a USB to RS232 cable from Astro-Gadgets. But is it as simple as putting the required connectors on each end of the appropriate cable?
Or is there required circuitry in the adaptor that comes with the bought adapter?

Astro Gadgets can make you an interface cable with any of three types of chips: FT232, CP2102 or CH340. FT232 (FTDI) is generally preferred.
If making yourself, you'll have to make sure you have the correct pinouts.
The chosen chip will also need a driver, but these can readily be downloaded if not already installed.

Bearing in mind this comment, I'll add that there are two different things that the cable does.
1: Has the correct plug on each end, so that the cable can be plugged in.
2: Translates USB to serial. These are very different and in computer terms, is like translating ancient Greek into Japanese.


So, simply changing plugs doesn't help, as this does not do any translation.


Buying the cable is the easiest, having said that, I think the telescope makers should have shifted to USB some time ago.
