This is Bernes 149, a reflection nebula within the Lupus 3 dust cloud lying between the constellations of Lupus and Scorpius. Lupus 3 is a star forming region with conditions thought to be similar to where our sun formed.

I found this very difficult to capture because it was very faint and for some reason there were significant gradients across the subs (especially blue). I also had difficulty calibrating with flats and then the processing was very challenging. Happy with the framing though. :D Maybe I'll try again next year...

Astrobin version is here (https://www.astrobin.com/full/417023/0/).

MATE, nice shot, first time i see this one..... looks hard to process, bright stars and faint stuff....

That's very cool - well done!

Now there's a new one for us. Looks very difficult. We can see the blue reflection nebulosity in wisps across the front of the main dust lane, which must presumably be much further away. Nice work.

Thanks all,

Yes it was difficult, and I'm not entirely happy with the result. I collected about 12 hours of data and discarded 3 hours, mostly due to misregistered flats (I suspect it was dew on the primary and I still don't have my head around dew control with a Newtonian). The SNR isn't good so it needed more subs I think. The 10"Newt is great (thanks Diego) but I might give it another try with the Esprit to see how a wider field of view changes things.

Hi Mate, where you running the fan when the primary Dew'd up?

Hi Diego,

No, the fan wasn't running. Is that all it takes? Excuse me for being dumb. :P

Not dumb at all, don't say that, i start the fan on my scope and i turn it off during the imaging session, otherwise, i will have dew on the primary at the end of the sequence...

That's a lovely, well framed shot. The dark neb and reflection neb really complement each other.

That is very interesting and unusual Kevin. I can see that it could be difficult to process but well worth the effort. Might be well worthwhile seeing what else Bernes has to offer.

Good image Kevin. Something I don't believe I have seen before. I will certainly add that to my list of targets. Despite the challenges it looks well handled.

A great photo of a beautiful object Kevin.

I attempted it a few years ago from a dark site and it was a very difficult object to capture and process.

Excellent work!

Ross.

Thanks all for the comments. I saw an example of it on the Astrodon website while I was researching NB filters. A much better version there! It's one I will definitely have to try again next year I think.

A great shot Kevin, of an intriguing piece of rarely imaged sky, lovely natural looking colour

I wasn't aware of this object. Nice image.
