Hi all,
Thought I'd share a little cautionary tale of the importance of needing to see what you are getting first before laying your money down. Buying sight unseen can be a very risky exercise.
A set of 9" Intes Maksutov Optics came up for sale via the grapevine. Of course I jumped at the chance, and asked about them. First reply I got had no photos attached. Fair enough I thought. When I asked for photos, oh my, what a shock I got! I've attached the photos I received.
* First, pay close attention to the corrector - there are chips along the blackened edge.
* Second, look carefully at the secondary - it is damaged on its left side, and a hairline fracture arcs out from the damage across the whole face of the secondary!
* Third, the primary is filthy. Really well looked after, not...
And this bloke had put the word out that he had a set of Russian optics available!
One less Unicorn left in the world... Very sad as they are not breeding any more. :(
Alex.
PS, the secondary mirror is the small separate mirror in the first & third pics. In a Gregorian Maksutov the secondary is a silvered spot on the corrector. In a Rumak Maksutov, and secondary is a separate unit altogether, like that of an SCT. This allows the manufacturer greater flexibility in parameters in desiging the scope.
