What have you tried already to get rid of them?

Hi Leon,

1. Take a deep breath and hold it.
2. While holding your breath, swallow 3 times.
3. While still holding your breath, count to 15 then exhale.

Works every time for me.

Hope it helps.

Please read the fine print Leon.

It's all there, black and white, clear as crystal!

You stole fizzy lifting drinks!
You bumped into the ceiling which now has to be washed and sterilized, so you get nothing!
You lose!
Good day, sir!

Lay off the fizzy lifting drink Leon.
Wonka's gonna get you.

Drink 2 bottles of red wine and fuggedaboutit.

My grandmother always said a really good dose of laxatives as you are too timid to hiccup

Hi Leon

Given these have persisted for 48 hours and if this is a new onset of this condition for you I strongly recommend seeing a GP as there are a number of medical reasons that can trigger persistent hiccups which are clinically significant. Better to get these ruled out as possible causes. If there is any pain around either shoulder tip in conjunction with these or a headache an ED would be a better option then a GP. It may well be a benign cause but better to be safe then sorry. Clinically I can think of a couple of things that could trigger these and which could be a symptom of something more significant.

The best technique that I know of requires a friend to enable it, as it has to be "triggered" by someone else out of the blue, you can't expect it or prepare for it - in much the same way as how you can't tickle yourself.

When the hiccupper is suffering from an attack, the non-hiccupper asks a bizzarre question, which requires some concentration to even interpret properly, let alone give an answer.

E.g. "When was the last time you saw a pink rhinoceros?" Or "If I put two peas in your shirt pocket, three peanuts in your pants pocket, and one almond in each hand, how many legumes would you have?"

Note: Now that you've seen and thought about those two questions, they probably won't work for you (unless they already worked while you were reading this!) Your assistant will need to think up their own question, and ask it when you're not expecting it. Sadly, therfore, this method may not work for you immediately, but maybe the next time you or a family member get an attack, give it a try.)

The theory is that the focus required to understand and answer the question interrupts the periodic involuntary reflex. It sounds bizzarre, but I've used it effectively numerous times on others.

Hope this helps - let me know if it works!

Leon I don't wish to alarm you or go into why I make this suggestion but I agree with Brian's suggestion to see a doctor as soon as possible. I suggest that it is better to be safe than sorry. Perhaps Google hiccups and look into what persistent hiccups may be a symptom of and perhaps you will realise that it is worth taking the matter seriously. Good luck sincerely hope there is actually nothing to worry about so let's hope you will be ok ...make sure you consult Dr Google and look under any section referencing the very very serious side of this matter. I hope we are not to late. Alex

A Google search produced these remedies :-

How can I stop, get rid of, and cure hiccups?

Drink a glass of water quickly.
Have someone frighten you.
Pull hard on your tongue.
Bite on a lemon.
Gargle with water.
Drink from the far side of a glass.
Use smelling salts.
Place one-half teaspoon of dry sugar on the back of your tongue.

Hi Leon,

I would also echo Brian's recommendation about seeking medical attention.

I know someone who had hiccups for a couple of days. A GP laughed it off.

Fast forward a couple of more days after consulting with the GP and
they underwent emergency heart bypass surgery.

I think one must take the view, particularly as the years creep up upon one, that anything abnormal even if a seemingly trivial matter must be taken most seriously as it becomes most likely that our system has a problem.

I was one of those "tuff men" who would soldier on proclaiming that typical Australian retort..."she will be right mate" which although heroic really often proves counter productive. These days, having embraced the most difficult thing an old person can do I call change, my approach now is entirely sensible, and by that I mean that I don't avoid a trip to the doctor...I suspect Leon is a "she will be right mate" type of guy but I feel it is in his best interest to change to being pedantic as to any change in his condition.

Leon please if you wake up and read this and still has the hiccups I implore you to put yourself first on the events scheduled for today and go see your doctor...look up the serious side of hicupps so you can ask your doctor if he thinks they may indicate this or that and take control of that meeting such that the doctor does not just nod and bustle you out without giving your problem proper thought...remember often to them you are just another number so make him or her realise you expect total attention...I am sure you can do that.

I sincerely believe that you must go to the doctor and please although you may casually dismiss me as a mug the others who offers similar advice are very sensible knowledgeable men...although we all have in common a realistic concern for your well being.
I hope it all goes well for you.
Alex

Hi Leon,

Echoing previous suggestions and given that it is incessant and none of the usual tricks work: see a doctor ASAP. I hope all goes well and you are rid of hiccups soon.

Best
JA

Well thank you one and all, I have tried some of your suggestions, however not any real difference in the long term.
Yes I will check in with the Doc, first thing Monday.

Thank you, Leon
