Landing the Eagle

It's been a long while between drinks(since last October actually), this is my first ever go at M16. Taken over two nights early this week from the backyard in Briar Hill with the Newtonian- combination of UV/IR cut filter and no filter using modded Canon DSLR and Baader coma corrector totaling 1hr 26'. Plenty of dew settling in after 10pm, very cold... Can't wait to build by obs...

Great stuff anth, good to see you’re back in to it. You would have to be happy with that result wouldn’t you?!?!
You’ve got some great colour there and picked up some good detail.
The thing you’ll find with an obs is it is so much easier getting much longer imaging times per target which in turn brings out much more detail and nebulously.....it’s the obvious next step mate!

Nice way to break the drought Anthony, that came up really well from the suburbs of Melbourne, great star colours and plenty of detail. Well done :thumbsup:. This should encourage you to get right back into it! ;)

Capturing Ha in Melbourne is never easy without a dedicated Ha filter so you've done well. Plus the star colours are great :thumbsup:

Thanks Imme, yeh pretty surprised to have got the detail actually, even though the transparency was less than desired. I actually took a calculated risk and left the mount setup outside and covered it up with a few towels to ensure the next session of imaging would be simpler and consistent with the initial subs. I’m driven to get my shed built as you say it makes things far more manageable. It’s in the planning stage mate...

Yes I’ve learnt that taking subs at low ISO 400 or 800 produce good star colour. This however means more subs need to be taken to gain the nebulosity. It’s a trade off I guess- hence another reason to build the obs. Need more time under the stars to build a better image...


Haha, yes Mick, the lure of getting out there never wanes it’s just me finding excuses to stay inside at the end of the day, kids work and the weekly runaround has a crunching effect. My obs will buy me time I hope...

Forever encouraging Atmos, appreciate your comments. The DSLR has been reliable enough to produce decent results thus far. An all rounder and no fuss approach makes it easier. No doubt point taken, Ha filter is next in line with guiding and perhaps CCD imaging. A step I definitely will persue. I’m pleased with the star colours too.

Mate will take you up on that for sure. I’ve acquired a steel pillar from our surveying yard and have designed a roll off roof. It’s a while off but at least the dream is now a possibility. By the way your take on M16 was a beauty.
