What does everyone think of pairing eqm35 and a orion ed80 for astrophotography.

The EQM35 is an "updated" EQ3...which was marginal at best for any kind of decent astrophotography due to the below-par machining on the gears etc. IF they have upgraded the quality assurance instead of just cosmetically altering it, then maybe.

Personally, i'd start with an HEQ-5.
