Interesting read Ron - nice to see the good old beeb keeping us safe, by reporting on plans to cater for NEO (potential) strikes. Some interesting names there too.

Cheers

:hi: Dennis, our government is not interested in NEO's, I once had a letter from the Office of the Minister of Science saying that the Minister was not concerned about an Asteroid hitting him on the head whilst he slept:shrug:

"A draft UN treaty to determine what would have to be done if a giant asteroid was on a collision course with Earth is to be drawn up this year.

"Oh no! If we leave it to the UN, with their track record, we're all doomed!

eDont worry plans are being made, a debate has opened, people are seeing where they can fit into the plan. It will happen, we as a species are privelegded to be able to comtemplate such a threat, but remember acting always takes time but action will happen. Already even folk who have read this thread are thinking about it and the ripples will move out in the pond of humanity. The biggest problem humans face is world politics, it could be better but the fact is it is better now than any time in history... and by the time the dust settles humans will probably have to face the threat..how many times have we near been wiped out..mmm nil maybe so this threat is coming for sure. We now live in a time where we can comprehend threats to our species, even though we fight umoungst ourselves we can pull together..this may be the thing to unit us..so how good is that.
Personally I want us to start thinking about battle stars we laugh that they are not needed but who knows and who cares, as to unite to face a common foe as a species must be good for us..We have a sort of loose control on the world and if we set our sights on greater foes we will be drawn together..mm but who wants that...no one? but it must mean humans are moving forward to even have such a possibility.
Lets get hold of that polly prepared to die at the hands of an astoriod and tell him we are concerned and extract a commitment for funding for scopes for everyone to keep a look out.. humans need an enemy why not have one out there not down here.. we dont need to actually have one we just need to think we have.
Now if you are not ready for bed read all that again..sweet dreams.

Sorry but the conspiracy theorist in me thinks this is just a damn good excuse to weaponise space.

Great link Ron and a very interesting read.
It all sounds a bit like a Monty python sketch.

"The time for action is now, Ok lets draw up an agenda and discuss it. Anyone got the minutes from the previous meeting"

it might sound a bit stupid now but if worst comes to worse id rather have someone saying 'ok lets do this' rather than 'what do we do now'
as for the weapons in space thing, not going to happen.. if you dont know about it already google for the star wars defence system. also regarding weapons systems stop thinking of sci-fi's shooting nukes at stuff, not gonna happen :)

how many places wait till they are on fire to draw up a fire plan. i reckon we need something but by the sound of it we have the wrong people trying to run the show.
