I have not notice much activity on the Sun recently with my little Coronado 40mm.

Is this just the stage of the Solar Cycle or do the these little scopes lose their effectiveness with age?

(2nd question, if I may - how can I make the Title of posts to be in bold type.)

Thanks in advance,

Bob

Its the former : the Sun is drop-dead boring at the moment with respect to sun-spots. It is at its quietest point of its eleven year cycle. maybe a good time to buy cheap solar scope with a good Fabry-perot etalon

Yes,
The Sun is relatively quiet at the moment, but still holds some surprises.
The recent large AR was unexpected .....but when will the next one come around?
There are usually proms still to be seen most days, and those observers with larger (>100mm) white light scopes can challenge themselves to record the granulation and their interactions.
A daily check on GONG or Space weather will show any interesting activity.

Merlin’s right the last AR was unexpected but it was quite beautiful to observe. Stick with it the sun will start up again in the next few of years. I bought my pst a couple of years ago so mine sits there and does nothing most of the time.

Plus one for this advice Bob... no more guessing before lugging out the gear for a solar viewing.. I find GONG (the second link) in particular an excellent resource for deciding if it's worth pulling out the Lunt..., not so much experience with the first link though...

Also, keep an eye on the imaging part on the forum, the main one... not the one us plebs are on... that is usually a great indicator of whether there is something going on with the sun...

Thanks everyone,

I feel much better about the scope and the titles now.

Always something interesting to observe on the sun especially in Ha, prominences etc. It seems that the recent active area, AR2738 is still very much active as something on the far side released an CME yesterday. So looking forward to it rotating back into view in a few days time.

I don't think you can change the title for obvious reasons people would be doing bold, italic, colours etc

Same here, nothing just waiting for something to happen

That's what I like about the PST. If it's a nice day, it's a 2 minute job to take it outside and have a quick peek. If there's something there, I might then setup the mount, camera, Quark, etc.
