I was in Bunnings yesterday to grab a tarp when I noticed that they sold padded cases. I grabbed one which was only $72 for my camera equipment. It has three layers of foam very sturdy, and does the job well.

I have found the medium case to be a good compromise between large and heavy (for what you put in it) and enough space for a goos set of eyepieces. These cases are pretty good and the price is better than when supercheap auto used to stock them.

In my Bunnings, they are on the outer shelves that make up the back wall of the Tool enclosure area. Where they have the rolling tool boxes, etc. Occasionally they get marked down, i think I paid $65 for mine, but mark downs are pretty rare at Bunnings these days.

I don't use mine (2 of them), since I can't do dark site trips anymore (health issues). I would not store astro gear in them long term, as they don't really breath and any moisture you put in there could lead to corrosion or mold. There is a breather port on the front, but if blocked by the inside foam it only equalises pressure And does not serve to ventilated and dry things out. If you put a damp finder scope or camera in there it will still be damp a week later. They are good for protection when travelling, but take the stuff out when you get home, or at least open them up.

Glen is right, these suckers don't let much in or out. I've got a 1125 x 405 version from supacheap auto for all my eyepieces, filters, etc - they're excellent, but dry your gear out well before packing it away.

I have the Supercheap rebrands - bought 3 when they were $45 each. They are fine.

Can't say the same about the yellow Kinchrome ones - locking tab issues, stinks to high hell...and yet cost more. Only 1 left here, dislike it immensely.

I have three - one black and two yellow.

If you set up as I do from time to time on a black tar pathway, black cases are effectively invisible in the dark and in this respect I much prefer the two yellow ones over the black one.

The other thing about a black case lined with black foam I find annoying is that the gear in it becomes quite hard to see.

I'm in the process of making a template with holes to hold stuff, to replace the black foam. Currently thinking of having this CNC cut in clear thick acrylic and then very dimly side-illuminating it from the inside with a couple of red LED's and a dimmer so I can see what's where without needing any other illumination. The point of using clear acrylic is that the surfaces provide total internal reflection so most of the light from the LEDs is trapped and bounces around a fair bit before escaping at the cut edges.
