The Purpose of Binning in Startools is to reduce the resolution of the image and to improve the signal to noise ratio SNR

Binning should be done after the first global stretch ( Autodev )

The presets are -
25% reduces image resolution by 25% , improves SNR by approx 4x
35% reduces image resolution by 35% , improves SNR by approx 2.9x
50% reduces image resolution by 50% , improves SNR by approx 2x
71% reduces image resolution by 71% , improves SNR by approx 1.7x

The default setting is 50%

DSLR’s benefit greatly by using 25% to 50% binning

Thank you Martin for your informative post.. .
Do you consider the noise and then decide on a percentage or do you go for a particular percentage keeping the dame approach for all images? I have been selecting 70% without knowing why and that selection I kept simply because everything still worked☺. But in time it would be nice to know what I am doing and why..no hurry but I am ready for that giant leap.

I ask myself the same question, how do you trade off resolution for noise reduction which is in effect Binning, and see the difference
It’s painful and time waiting but lately I’ve been trying 50% then see the outcome and then try 35%
You can see the difference when you get to your final noise reduction in Startools
If your using a DSLR it’s advisable to use 50%, 35% and only 25% when your image is terribly noisy
I think 50% works ok for most images whether your using a DSLR or cooled Astro camera ( default setting )
