Holiday???

The weather has me thinking..pack it all up buy a tent and go out West someplace and spend a couple of months under clear skies.
Where?
The first place I looked at was a two building spot..a one room pub with a guest house..looked ideal from google Earth but getting a street view showed puddles by the road side☺ I thought inland was dry as...so where could one go to be sure to get clear sky for a month or two?

Better still a camper van shipped to Chille and sneek in along side some of the monster scopes so high up that you need an oxygen mask.

So where to go what to take?

A friend and fellow engineer who goes to Cerro Paranal now and then
described to me when they were first building the telescopes there
he was living with fellow workers in shipping containers in the
Atacama desert.

When it was completed, the astronomers came swanning in and got
to stay at the luxury ESO hotel the real workers also built that was
featured in the James Bond Quantum of Solace movie.

To replicate some of that rustic outdoor feel, you could pitch a tent on one
of the railroad sidings between the Stuart Highway and the tracks
north of the Glendambo Roadhouse in South Australia.

During the 2002 eclipse, there were many of us that did precisely that.
We were lucky enough to have a 20" with us and it was fabulous observing.

The local artesian bore water has that pervasive sulphide funk about it
for that complete outback rustic experience.

Gary you make it sound so appealing when you mention there is tasty water ..sure beats the alternative for surviving dry conditions.

Hi Alex,

The beer at the Glendambo roadhouse/hotel/motel/campground is
not cheap but it is probably cheaper to shower using it than with
the fresh water they have to tank in.

Shower???are you saying there are girls out there?
Having lived on a boat I can be very frugal with water...I can wash with only a litre then strain that and make a cup of tea.

I expect being hot you probably need to take 3 liters of water times the days out there...mmm thats about 300 liters ...so need a tank delivered and get in touch with the water delivery guy..now as to food..100 kgs of rice should do it☺.

Excellent.

Sounds like the camel would go wanting for water before you would.

In that case this sheep and cattle station next to Wilpena Pound has
a handful of pay-per-night bush camping sites.

If a group of Swedish backpackers turn up at one of the other camp
sites and fancy a look through the scope, there is a creek to splash
some water behind the ears and freshen up in.
