anyone into australian stamps

In the process of getting ready to move house, my wife uncovered the old stamp collections I haven't opened in donkeys years. In there she found a card with some fairly old Australian stamps and I'm wondering what the best way might be to get a sense of their value (if any).
The set includes
9d kangaroo
3d kangaroo
1/- kangaroo
1 1/2d kangaroo
4d koala
5 1/2d lyre bird
1/- lyre bird
and so on.

That's the sort of stamp she has pulled out so far. I know there's more but for the moment, I'm really just wondering about the best way forward with them.

Anyone into this stuff?

Peter, know what you are saying, most stamps of the Australian variety are not really that rare.
For instance The Penny and Half Penny and The Shilling are quite common even today.
However if you delve deeper you just may have a special one like the Black Swan for instance, from WA.
Get that book that Bart suggested and you will be amazed at what you might find.

Am a big stamp collector myself. Generally Aussie stamps arent worth much and usually less than the time to look them up. First up condition is everything, DO NOT touch them with your hand or try to clean or protect them yourself. Leave that to the new owner who knows what they are doing. You could pop into a local library and borrow a stamp catalogue but be aware, stamp catalogues are BUYING catalogues they are NOT valuations at all. They are the prices you can expect to pay to buy that issue in the condition listed.

Your stamps condition is vital to any possible value but what you've listed is common and any value there is hidden in tiny flaws and variations that need close examination by a collector specialising in those varieties.

If you can take a photo or scan of what you've got and email me at sjbolton at gmail dot com and I can give you better advice on how to proceed. Again do not try removing them from where they are or anything. Any key higher value ones should jump out at me and I can let you know better.

Without seeing there's no advice to give. Its both possible you have something in there worth hundreds but aussie stamps are not worth millions so dont get hopes up. Plus there are reproductions and fakes of valuable stamps out there in collections as space fillers or because people got scammed into buying fakes for their collections.

The kangaroo and map issue I have a specialised collection, as well as the KGV sidefaces that came after. Others collect postmarks, and others collect intact covers (envelopes with stamps and postmarks intact). So I can't stress enough do NOT do anything to them until they've been seen. Up to you, email me pics if you want and I'll give my 2c on them, you won't likely be able to find a dealer anymore to take them too and you might get $10 for a box of full albums or by the kilogram weight or something. Then again you could have a rarity but not likely.
