First good clear night in 2 months so I got the scope out.
I am yet to find the sweetspot for the modded Canon 50d but I was pleased to see some detail in the galaxy.

18 x 120s ISO 1600. Darks Flats, Flatdarks and bias calibration/processing in ImagesPlus and PS2 for high pass filter

Some horizontal banding and an odd spot midway across near the lower edge, but these defects that dont appear in other shots.

Thanks for looking

Nice image Glenn
Banding is either read noise or shot noise
Try “dithering” if your guiding makes a huge difference
Plus what temperature was your Canon running at ?

A wonderful image Glen so natural...Star tools has something to eliminate banding if it stays an issue.
However well done is all I can say.

Thanks guys.

How do I find out what the sensor temp is/was at acquisition?

I use Backyard EOS capture software for my Canon 600D and it gives you the sensor temperature read out in Celsius for each exposure
During this last summer ( Dec to Feb ) my Canon was running between 32 to 38degC which is extremely high and the major cause of noise in my images that’s why I tried dithering which improved my SNR considerably
At the moment it’s running at 25degC and in winter usually gets down to 18 to 22degC which is fine
BYEOS is great capture software and only cost me $70 plus a 5m USB cable $15 and I was up and running
If your Canon 50D Was manufactured before 2006 it may not connect to BYEOS, I think there is a trial version as well to try out

Forgot to mention as well , I use a Canon remote power supply to my camera with a 5m mains power cord , so my internal battery is removed which also reduces heat in the camera over a long imaging session
I have my imaging laptop 2 metres away from my mount and it’s housed in a plastic tub turned sideways on a little adjustable table so it’s protected from the elements. Under the table is my 6 way power board, 2 x 7.5amp 12v powertech power supplies, Powered USB hub etc... I drilled some holes through the bottom of the tub to allow the cables to connect to the laptop
It’s a nifty set up and I copied it and improved it from Trevor Jones Astro Backyard

8” f5 newt on an EQ6-R Mount
My 4 channel Dew controller is cable tied to the spreader accessories plate and cables loop up to the Kendrick heater straps on my OTA and finder / guide scope
I bought a second hand drum stool ( $15 ) to sit at my laptop

Looks good Martin.

I had an idea that temp was on the exif part of the raw fits files - but I dont know anything about getting to that data either! BYEOS sounds pretty good.

I must put the question on the ImagesPlus yahoo group...

I'll get dither going next time - I'd selected the wrong settings this run.
