Is it worth anything??

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated…

The telescope was given to my step-dads father many years ago as payment for a job he did. From what I’ve found already, I believe it’s a 1970's YOSCO <SYW> 108/1600, s/n # 17639, Mod. "AE-106" - "SKY MASTER" refractor telescope.

We believe it’s in fair condition for it’s age, saying that we don’t really know what we’re looking for when it comes to selling/purchasing telescopes.

See photos further on in the thread.

Once again, if anyone can give me info on this scope it would be awesome!

Thanks,
Beth

Beth,

It is possibly a 4" F16 refractor from the early 1960's. These are not very practical scopes to use compared to modern telescopes, but they are an impressive sight in the study or on the balcony!

If yours has the equatorial mount, wooden tripod and all contained within a nice wooden box, it could be worth some hundreds of dollars. Not likely to ever be worth a thousand.

Work out how to post pictures - it will help (hit the Go Advanced button below the reply window)

It has a very good pedigree and will be quite rare, the offers will come thick and fast, don't just give it away.

Wow, that thread has given the scope quite a wrap! Congrats Beth on a very tidy score!

If the optics - objectives and eyepieces are good, and the tube is in good condition - there’s nothing wrong with an old-school 4” refractor.

As below it will make a fine ornament and if it’s useable you can always put it on a modern electronic mount of you’d like GOTO etc.

My fault, i realised the image sizes were too big for uploading.

Unfortunately there is no box for the scope.

It's a decent size thats for sure! I'm in the first photo, and to get an idea i'm 5 foot 6.

Here it is...

Be careful not to use any "solar" filters/eyepieces that may be included.

Looking at the photos and considering it's missing the case , and these came in an awesome one when new , I would say anywhere between $800 - $1000 as it is a quality Japanese telescope that needs a bit of TLC and the optics and build will be top knotch ! :eyepop: .

108mm aperture at f15 will make this scope a real Luna and Planetary scope and if you wanted buy a 0.965 inch ( thats the eyepiece barrel size ) to 1 1/4 inch adaptor you could use modern Orthoscopic's or Plossl's ( eyepiece designs ) to really make this bad boy sing b.

AWESOME SCOPE  , and don't sell it cheap as it's worth quite a bit .

Brian.

They're selling up and going travelling so are definitely wanting to sell this. But know they would absolutely love it to go to someone who has a passion for this sort of stuff, as unfortunately it's just been sat in a cupboard for many years not being put to use!
