Hello,
This weekend I was fortunate enough to be part of a high altitude balloon launch on behalf of the Mars Society of Australia. I designed a camera to take regular images along the way. This is one of the 8000 images from the trip. The balloon was launched a few hours from Canberra and is believed to of reached 29km.

Cheers,

Trent

That's cool!

I often wonder how far you have to drive and how hard it is to recover the baloon and equipment.

Beautiful view of Mother Earth
Imagine what Felix Baumgartner felt standing on the porch of his capsule another 10km higher up and about to jump off into the unknown

Thanks guys,
This image was a long time coming, it was a battle between weather and logistics, I haven’t set up a blog/site at this stage. This camera payload was a “bonus” but may provide us enough data for a peer review paper. I have a dedicated science package going up within the next couple of months (another paper) this might have a page allocated to it; but this amongst other projects prevent me from broadcasting too much. But here is an older link

I have a lot more images, but little time to apply the enhancements. I have made a timelapse from launch to landing, but unless you want to feel like an orpan sock in a slin cycle; it’s otherwise unpleasant viewing.

Cheers,

Trent

Excellent image Trent! One day I may do similar with a high altitude balloon.

Do you know Steven Hobbs? We used to hang out a lot as young fellas some 25 years ago.

Hi Kevin,
Steve Hobbs is my partner in crime in all this. Have a look at the links if you haven’t already.
