In an effort to move the debate as to alternative energy to what we have at the moment I thought it would be tidy to start a new thread.
Given that we must address Historic Climate Change and the depletion of finite energy supplies what are our alternatives.
Our planet has depended on solar energy either in the form of coal, oil or wood etc and we also have somthing that no other species has been able to have access to nuclear fuel ..and build our own Sun. So rather than turn a thread commenting on the real problems of being a scientist in a political world I ask what do you think are alternatives we can consider.

When asked to comment on the Sydney rain we enjoyed yesterday and before the NSW Premier was quick to mention that we still need to install desalinators. AND today announcements are coming as to the new proposed tax on greenhouse gases.
So it is probably pointless to think any alternatives discussed will go past this thread.
I goggled Historic Climate Change a term I spent some time to come up with earlier today and used in this post and another elsewhere. to see if the term would be picked up by Goggle and link me here and the other place.I truth I was trying to get it into the vocabulary of Australians you know introduce a new BUZZ word. Guess what goggle at the top of the list said today the PM was to host a Historic Climate Change Summit.. so twilight zone music has been ringing in my head since.
I can’t believe it. Is my neck top linked to a mental www ???
I can’t understand it ..it is so freaky and all I can think they like me coined the term as being the best way to describe what many call Global warming which I felt was an accurate description of what is happening but given the proposed TAX maybe there is something going on ..I just don’t know anymore.
Mental telepathy is alive and well maybe but what a coincidence my brain cant except anything else as an explanation.
AND apparently on Alan Jones radio the problem has not been blamed on human activity and every thing up to now says as much.
That plus finding that there is thought that the dark energy relates to a very small particle many times smaller than the electron as I believe to be the case has me all extremely confused. Today has been a surreal dream where what I think about has come true.. Have you ever had such a day???? I have had similar but not like this.
AND Snoweyskiesau I must have missed something on the link all I could raise was how to magnetize a nail using manual power this is a joke I know but was there more than that that dial up denied me seeing it all??
I have not heard the term Historic Climate Change I thought I made it up today but there is a summit called that so it must have been in use to convene it so it must have been around before today.
I think I have lost it ..it can’t come to me and someone else at the same time. sure it describes the situation but why is today the first day I have heard it???
Anyways I can’t think about alternatives now other than to say if we are going to go nuclear we should ensure that the resources are kept under our economic control so Australia owns the stuff.
A very very confused Alex

Well its a new day and the Sun is out.
I am not game to look it again but as far as I am concerned I will think about yesterday as there was a summit on climate change that was described as "historic".
I was wondering if we could invent something to change co2 into c (in the form of diamonds) and o. Bet there would be no limit of investors if you sounded as if it were a chance.

I am a man who respects the wisdom of Homer and Ving and can except that it can be way above my head as is indeed your observation..
Are you saying you are sick of talk of windmills or to alert me to a new problem that must be addressed. I will go to a quiet place and think upon your words.
I said it before and it is indeed obvious.."when the Sun sets in the saucer of milk the cat will sing to the cookoo clock". Needless to say I can not claim to be the author and merely relate what was said for he was a wiser man than me.

windmills are certainly very pretty arent they? I dont know that they would do much on a large scale but they are pretty... solar? its not a fix for a large population. how about the hot water one? er... thermo something. nice and clean but not inexhaustible.

new killer is a good short term answer....

maybe we should be doing something with the sea, theres lots of that!

I understand what you meant now.
I made a solar cooker..cardboard box with alfoil lining, bit of iron inside and a glass cover..unbelievable.. throw in a can of something and by the time you remember it is as hot as, have made coffee, cooked vegies, would fry an egg but have not bothered to date, ...but not suggesting thats an option just a fun thing to do, mind you go to a web site and they suggest such an approach is the answer, you know how these alternative folk get a little crazy..but an efficient solar cooker will bake bread.
For hot water in the summer I use the water coming from the dam that is heated by the Sun in the pipe delivering it ,black polly pipe, and use the hot water tank to get the cold water.. the water straight from the pipe is too hot to use without the cold water from the hot water tank.. I like the idea of nuclear if we can build an arsenell to keep people from our precious Sunlight.

Why not PUPPY POWER
I read this in Ripleys Believe it or Not.
In England during the 1400's, terriers were trained to run inside revolving cages to turn a crank that in turn, turned the spit over the fire.
Here's another
In 1875, a Frenchman named Guitu invented the cynosphere, a tricycle that could go up to six miles per hour - powered by two dogs running inside the back wheels.
Believe it or not!

Bundy the baby dog, when younger loved to help me with the wheelbarrow. He loved it he still lines up when I use it but unfortunately his heart is not as strong as his spirit. But even dogs love to have work and purpose. They are great sources of heat. When I first went up there it rained everything was wet all was in a sorry shed I got cut off as Sandy followed the ambulance out carrying her father (he died later) could not start a fire had to sleep in a wet bed two dogs body heat saved my life, it was a very scary experience freezing to death and nothing I could do about it.

how does it go on say cloudy days or juxst in winter when you want hotter water?

i am sure energy can be otained from this smilie if we hook it up right

or wind-up power :screwy:

In winter or overcast days the roll of the hot water tank, the one used for cold becomes a hot water tank as it collects heat from the fuel stove. The polly pipe then is supplying cold water.. things change with the weather. The solar cooker does not work on cloudy days but on those days its nice to have the fuel stove gong ..in winter the open fire burns most of the time but it warms the rock work and the cement floor so its nice and toasty even if it is out for a day.. but it is nice on those long wet times as it keeps the place dry and warm.

One guy up there puts his washing in a large barrel with soap in the boot of his car before a trip to town, another has additional batteries in the boot to charge when he goes somewhere. Another just runs a diesel genny no stop.
It depends on your needs my point was mine are simple and I can get away with simple systems the guy who runs the genny no stop has to for refrigeration units.
