I'm not a fan of calling NGC 3576 the "statue of liberty" nebula, as
a) it's a deep southern object and b) looks more like someone doing a basketball slam dunk.
Anyway....naming rights aside, I added a smidge more L data to last year's data set.
The link is here (http://www.atscope.com.au/BRO/gallery461.html)

That's wonderful, Peter.
Yours is the first image I can recall that shows a clear overall colour difference between the left (Ha-dominant) and right (OIII dominant, much more energetic) sides.
I have a textbook somewhere that attributes the difference to a galactic-scale density wave propagating across the region. Clearly the energetic right side has had intense recent supernova activity, with lots of "covered wagon hoop" shock wave fronts at the top, so it is at the peak of activity.
Trouble is, I can't find the article, and can't remember what the exact story is for the left hand side. It looks like there's a mature open cluster on the left, which would suggest that we're toward the end of things, but then there's still a lot of hydrogen about also. Not all the gas has been dispelled, so the story has a long time to run.
Totally agree: it's a southern object and its not the statue of Liberty. The lower half of the right hand side is a dancing Hereford cow, complete with shaggy forelocks. The dark figure sadly mistaken for the statue of liberty is something along the lines of a black panther, sitting on top of the Hereford.
And then there's the covered wagon hoops. toward the very top. The statue of Liberty definitely doesn't have them.
Beautifully processed as always.
Best,
Mike

What an incredible image, everything has come together beautifully.
Thanks for the marvellous view.

Thanks for your very kind words Mike
While I can see the obvious fish swimming towards me, I udderly cannot see the dancing bovine. Is she about to go "tits-up" ?
As for the black panther...I just don't know...and you can't be too careful these days, given the fate of the hot air balloon named Back Magic over Canberra skies...a happy smiley face on black Nomex and Nylon was clearly racist and offensive.
Seeing a Black panther...well...I suspect the PC police be 'aknocking soon enough if we go with that moniker :)
The wagon hoops I'll give you...they are plain as day...but I suspect these are rare birds south of the equator as well..and as for what the Cheyenne might make of a "Wagon Hoop" Nebula ...well best not go there....:D

Nice one Peter. Probably the best image I've seen of this pair and I agree with your comment about the "statue of liberty"

Incredible detail and colour Peter!

Thanks guys...This one is a little tricky to process well. The wagon hoops are quite faint, which to show well affects the highlights...I suspect they need subduing a tad. Colour is about right. A little more lunimace, weather permitting should tidy up any residual noise.....
...as for an appropriate name...maybe the "high five" nebula?? :D

Amazing. So much detail and the stars are so tight.
Love it. Yes 11,000 light years is quite a drive.

Thanks Greg. The AFFR compressor/flattener pulls the system down to F6 with absolutely no distortion to the edge of the 16803 chip. The downside was I had to have a custom adapter and second filter-wheel cover to obtain the correct spacing requirements...but still, exploring what an RC16 @ F6 can do will be fun.

Absolutely lovely, but shouldn't it be far and farther? Judging by the guessed at size of the universe, I suppose it could be near and nearly as near.:)

Ta...It's all relative...and probably a short hop to either at warp factor 9 :)
(I have a confession to make...I am such a died in the wool "Trekkie" that my car rego ends in: 1701 )
Peter you need to stop doing this stuff, :) it is absolutely beautiful ;)
I love it

That looks great Peter, lovely colours & details.
Covered wagon? Yep
Statue of Liberty? Yep
Dancing cows? Might need a few stiff whiskeys to see them!

Great image!
But to me it will always be Loki's helmet.
We already have Thor's helmet up there. Only seems right that his mischievous brother Loki gets a look in.
I can't unsee the Statue of Liberty here and as a result can't call it otherwise - it's a dead ringer for The Statue of Liberty: the torch is even in the right hand, there's a hint of a flowing type robe and even the pedestal she's mounted on is in isometric projection, but since it's your image, poetic licence prevails and ....
Great image Peter

Thanks to all for your comments. But what to call this enigmatic structure.
Not a Marvel fan...infact any sort of US hegemony...needs something iconic and not associated with any one nation or Hollywood Sci-Fi costume designers...
How about: The Coronal Loop Nebula!

A very sharp rendering of this object Peter. The colour is always a pain to get right. I have done this objects several times but only twice in LHaRGB. I came to a similar image colour with the one on the left being more orange and the one on the right more magenta.

Paul, I'm curious what you're aiming for when you revisit an object (sorry to hijack the convo)
Apart from new equipment, different filter combinations or longer integration, would you not get the same result?
New to this, so interested in the why's and wherefores. :-)

So is the position of this statue supposed to be like the one on the left or the right?
Peter Ward
05-03-2019, 01:48 PM
Right....but I think the description I gave it a few years back (http://www.atscope.com.au/BRO/gallery138.html) is not bad...

Ta Marc....Nice cow. So what's her name?
Is she owned by a Chinese dairy....and known as Li Ying Kow?

No-one else can see Loki's helmet? For me it's unmistakable. Partly because it's such a stupid helmet. Can you imagine going into battle with that thing on your head? :-D

Running Gnome, Li Ying Kow, Michael Jordan.... ..all good so long as it's not Lady Liberty (as you can see from my attached 2016 happy snap, her arm position is just all wrong)

Not to take over Peter's thread I'll be short. Factors such as seeing, focal length and perfectionism all paly a part here. I have done two focal length version and a couple in various filter sets. Still not 100% happy with either but I have the data sets now.
Peter Ward

Indeed. I tested the waters on this object with my 305mm F3.8 Honders...and was not at all happy with the result.
(sharp but not enough scale)
There are not many people doing narrow field, high resolution imaging on IIS ( there is a big difference in images that look sharp and ones that have truly high resolution)
and to be fair it's not easy....as even the slightest equipment issue becomes obvious when the FWHM's head toward 1.5 arc sec.
While the data in this image is OK, it's not at the top end of what my imaging system has been able to produce...with seeing being a VERY big factor.
What I do like about the system is the pristine stars across the entire 16803 chip...no simple trick IMHO.

What a stunning image, Peter. I can see the Statue of Liberty, but the sweeping "ram horns" in the upper part of the image and the strong Ha - not to mention the baleful gaze of that orange yellow star as well as the forward looking animal "face"bottom right, all combine to convey some sense of stellar evil....A satanic title would fit the fiery mood of your wonderful image!
