Horizontal. 10 x 20 secs 100mm at f/2 ISO 1600. Subs kept short so the main stars of the cross were not lost in a myriad of stars.

not lost? lol, its full of stars :) cases like this I like to try adding star spikes in photoshop to the stars of interest to get them to pop a bit. Could also process to bring out star colours stronger them use masking for the main stars and subdue everything else (eg reduce star brightness and/or halve colour saturation) again just to help those few stand out a bit better. I'd try for the second option here, overall the image while crisp is fairly monochromatic reducing interest for me.

Sorry but for me shots like this, especially my own, annoy me as all i can see are lots of little lines of stars and horseshoes throughout the shot, i keep wondering if theres a catalogue of lines of four or more stars? lines seem to be everywhere.

I think it still got lost Rayno. It's a nice shot but you can't help the fact that it's in a region of sky that just has a reduculous number of stars. Processing is always a bit of a subjective topic but I respectfully disagree with Sil. Adding spikes for me is a huge no no. I never like to put so etching into an image that isn't there. To a lesser extent ( because I know it's common practice ) I disagree with masking too. If it happens that there are millions of stars in your image, that's because there's millions of stars in the area you're imaging. If you're going to tone stars down to for example give nebulosity greater contrast then I feel you should tone down all of the high lights although I know most will disagree with me. I guess it's a matter of art verses accuracy and each have their merits.

For me the only thing I noticed with this image is that it doesn't take much zooming to see the squareness of the stars. My answer to that is don't zoom lol.
