I haven't posted here for ages... been too cloudy! So I've been playing with weather satellites with my own dish in the backyard.

So here I was, trying to get a good light angle on Typhoon Wutip. At 0630UT I noticed there was an anomaly on the bottom right hand side of the Earth shot, over on the unilluminated side. I zoomed up on it and blow me down it was the Moon half occulted behind the Earth ! Albeit cropped off.

The Himawari 8 camera crops around the Earth so as to not waste data bandwidth transmitting the blackness of space, but this time something got through. How cool is that! The Moon from Himawari 8! Or part of it lol.

Himawaricast via Jcsat2B, received with a 2.3 metre dish and Novra S300D receiver.

Thanks Dunk and Bob!

It was purely by accident Dave when looking for a good eye from Wutip.

Maybe Jupiter, Mars or Venus might be possible too on the rare occasion.

It did it again today! I'll drop a link to ezyzoom for the full 121MP resolution. It's on the bottom left this time.

When I showed my kids these pics, they asked me if I've already ordered my own dish to try this out.

LOL

Even the remainders of the cyclone Oma are visible east of the NSW coast where I stay now (Mullumbimby).

I'm afraid it is one of those hobbies one can get sucked into.

Yes it is. And severe typhoon Wutip in the northern hemisphere.

How much to get a used Meade into GeoStationary above your back yard.

Do you think ElonM would help, with free spxflight time...? 8)
