Concern for Andrew McAuley

Andy McAuley was just 70 or so kilometres from completing his attempt at paddling from Tasmania to New Zealand when he lost contact on Friday night. I see on tonight's news that his kayak has been found, but no sign of Andy.

I have known Andy for the last 20 years or so, sharing experiences canyoning, caving, canoing and bushwalking. While it doesn't look good there is still hope he'll survive. My thoughts are with Vicki and his family.

Hopefully he will be found alive, I can't help but wonder why he didn't have an EPIRB, or did he??

I dont know what to say other than lets all have hope and see his return to safety in our minds and ask for a miracle. My heart goes out to you and his loved ones.

From my understanding, he had an EPIRB. It was found in the kayak. Knowing Andy, I would expect him to have all the right gear. It is the nature of responsible risk taking and adventure that despite all the preparation, there are still risks.

Just back from Andy's Memorial Service, and I'm so glad I went.

The service was held at Macquarie Lighthouse in Vaucluse overlooking the Tasman Sea. Over 300 people were in attendance, plus media. I got to catch up with mutual friends, some of whom I haven't seen for over 10 years. Shame it has to be an occasion like this to get to see one another, but it was good to meet again!

There were eulogies from his his father, his brother and sister and from Vicki, as well as several of his expedition mates. Vicki also played some audio recovered from Andy's kayak (he was recording, filming and photographing as he went as part of a documentary). It was very moving stuff, that had us all choked up and crying, and then laughing within a matter of seconds, and yet feeling immensely proud to feel those emotions. It was great to hear his voice again.

Andy was a truly great man! I cannot think of anyone I would admire more. It is a sad day, but not because Andy is gone. Of course I am a little bit sad that I won't see him again, but I am so glad to have known him. It's a sad day because those who haven't met him now won't get the chance.

He had plans to expand his motivational speaking and to write his memoirs. Vicki has vowed to write write them for him. I hope those who haven't met Andy will read Andy's story when Vicki finishes it. If she captures 10% of his spirit, you'll be inspired!

Sounds like a very moving service Al.
I have attended my share of memorial services & have found a time for reflection on my own life after these moments.
My resolve from this is "Carpe Diem" Sieze the day.
Something that I am sure Andrew would have a understood.
I never knew Andrew, but I share in your loss & salute his great life at the same time.
