Abount NBN modem... to be or not to be?

I am a bit confused...

My ISP (IInet) tells me I have HFC at my MT Waverley house, but all I can see is distribution box with coaxial cable (RG6) and 75ohm termination inside... no trace of fiber...
Reading their website doesn't help at all, the only thing they are really talking about there is new plan (and new contract with new payment of course).


So I am guessing I need a cable modem (VDSL2 compatible?).
Or I am expecting too much... or maybe the NBN job is not finished yet?



On the other hand, our (future) residence in Ballarat already has optical fibre with modem (complete FTTP), it was there for at least 2 years or more.

I am not in a hurry to switch to NBN yet, since I don'yt know for how long we will stay at present address.. and once we move house, there will be new comtract (and more payments of course).

I do not like all this... why it is our problem and not ISP's?

Money is the answer, of course, but still..

For HFC (Hybrid Fibre Cable), the fibre is in the distribution network only, it doesn't run to the premises, only a coaxial cable is run to the premises. If you already have Foxtel cable, they will use that; if you have Optus cable, they will not use it, and they will run a new coaxial lead-in, which they will also do if you have no existing cable at all.

When the NBN HFC service is connected, they will provide a cable modem, so don't go out and buy one. You will need a router, however, which most RSPs can also provide, or you can provide your own.

If you are getting a bundled phone service from your RSP, some RSPs require you to use their modem to access their phone service, while others are OK with you using your own router. If you are not getting a bundled phone service, then you should be able to use your own router.

If you already have a router with an Ethernet "WAN" port, you should be able to use that to connect to the NBN HFC cable modem, but if your modem is getting a bit old (and especially if the wi-fi doesn't reach across your whole home well), this might be a good time to look at an upgrade.

Thank you for clarificaion - I thought this should be like you described, but I could not get that kind of details in replies from my ISP sales (IINET.. I used to be happy with them but I am not any more).
