I need to ask after riding a bike for the first time since adolescence . Since things developed...how...um... do you...errr... prevent extreme castration pain? I tried all kinds of arrangements, permutations and combinations and undergarments, and, well, errr....yeah, it still hurts no matter the collimation

There is no way in Hades I am wearing bike pants - spandex on lard butts is humorous at best - there will be bulges everywhere. Is there any seat type that perhaps has a "man hole", or a short seat without the extended bit?

I need to get in shape a little (understatement), but this is just ridiculous, especially being hot presently which makes things more gravity inclined.:thanx: I would like to retain the ability to father more children if need be

Harden up young man..., bite the bullet and get a pair of riding pants, who cares what your butt looks like, the skin will toughen in due course..:):)

That's what worries me - not being able to "harden up"

Maybe 'toughen up' would be more appropriate. I think John's advice would exacerbate the problem.

Bike pants are the the best way to go but otherwise tight knickers help a bit (though they still chafe). Alternatively just remove the seat and use the post. Of course some 'skin' will still need to toughen up. :P

That would do the job. Very comfortable.
Then as John said you'll toughen up you little princess. :P

Nah... just park'em start doing 60km until everything hurts and it'll take your mind off it.

On a more serious note, riding with underpants under a pair of shorts is a good way to get some serious chaffing, I have been riding a lot of years and would not recommend that approach at all, depending on the type of bike you ride, you can get a more loose fit with X_Country or Downhill type pants. As far as a saddle is concerned, you can go to a bike shop and see what fits your butt or :lol: toughen up. You will get used to it :P:P:P

Harley Davidson.

Hey Lewis, get a rower. Start with that, shed some kgs then off on your bike to finish off then maybe run a little later on, down the road, to the pub ;)

There's pubs in Canberra? I thought it was all coffee shops and similar wankery.

Pub...mmmm.... hops and barley...

Nope, just places for hipsters to get their craft ales and look down on all the regular folk who eat regular food.

For original poster: Why the hell you asking this here, go to a cycling store and ask or did you only try kmart?

Because anyone involved in astro photography has been exposed to pain and suffering, that's why.

Actually I got mine from Aldi, 10 years ago. $150.00. True story.

Your Holy Seat?

You could wear a pair of shorts over the bike pants. I found that worked fairly well.

They are very comfortable to ride with a good seat .

It's been a few years ... OK, 25 ..... but I used to ride daily. I remember gel seats being all the rage. When I got my new bike (mostly as a dust collector, of course) I got one of them holey sets. While it felt good in the shop, it "bit" on the road, so I got a gel saddle cover for it as well. It's just bearable in that configuration.

Try a few in the shop, but sit on it for more the a few minutes if you can.

BTW, nether region numbness from cycling is no laughing matter - that can lead to a serious medical condition. It's not so much that you need to harden up, it's that you need to avoid doing anything that stops you from ... ahem .. hardening up ...

Presactly.

Wife has a gel seat and it is better for me. I'll get one tomorrow. I rode mine today for 5km, and my butt was crying after 2.5... my gingangoolies survived thanks to good underdaks though :D:P It was 38°, so not "user friendly" day for it.

Have never seen so much empathy (or lack thereof) in this forum.

You certainly touched everyones sympathies with this subject. ;):P

Hi Lewis

Search for 'shy shorts' such as these, they have most of the advantages of the lycra ones, but, not nearly as obvious.

I found the split saddles much better than the normal ones. It can take buying a few before you find one you are really happy with. Depends on the distance you are going as well.

As for discomfort on the butt, I find that goes away, a few days after some 20km rides.

Have fun, and drink plenty of water while riding.

I found that I was drinking 2 water bottles on the way home (during summer), and more when I got there! I bought a 3L version of one these, and occaisionally emptied it on the way home.

No I got the seat separately. I've had it for a while now and it feels as good as it looks, even after some serious mileage.

I use a pair of Endura Humvee baggy mountain bike shorts.
Mine came with the now optional clickfast inner lining (read padded underpants).
They aren’t cheap but work well and you don’t look ridiculous.

FWIW, your bum will toughen up if you ride more frequently. Hard core riders use butt cream (Chamois Cream) stops chafing, that may help.

Seat height and position are important, too low and or too far fore or aft and you put extra pressure “down there”

Simple, like new shoes, you keep at it

Also IF you can afford a proper saddle

I use a good leather one

Lewis, if you have not adjusted your seat this is a good start.

I was a bicycle mech for years and have heard all this before, sounds like your seat isn't angled right. You need 3 points of even contact, just under your balls and both butt bones  if you have a seat putting more pressure either way your going to have a bad time.
Go and see Mick at onya bike belco and he can help you out. I use to work there many years ago.
