Hi all,

I managed to get 4 hours on the Rosette last night with some decent guiding. I even solved an issue I have been having. During acquisition the last few times it appears that guiding and even tracking suddenly stops, I worked out last night that the mount had reached its Meridian limits and I needed to manually perform a meridian flip, problem solved.

I have also been working through many, many PI tutorials and have come up with an image I am actually quite happy with for a beginner.

48 x 5 minutes at iso 400
HEQ5 + WO Star 71 + Unmodded 550D

Very nice indeed, but use ISO 800. If I remember rightly that is the sweet spot for the 550D, and my 600D. Your image is very dark for subs of that length, even though you are using a small scope. Lightened up I think it would be a superb image.

Thanks Raymo, I'll give iso 800 a go next clear night out. I think the image is dark because I fell into the trap of clipping my blacks. How is this version?

Definitely better, but I would go a little further.

Okay just had a look at ArcSinhStretch in PI and then some careful Curves, GradientXterminator and Levels, rinse and repeat a few times. Definitely pops a lot more now.

Thanks for the push Raymo!

No worries. Its slightly lacking in contrast; fix that and you're off to the main forum.

Nice clean image Paul !!
What do you use for acquisition , frame , focus and capture ?
If it’s clear tomorrow night ( south coast ) I’m going to try the Rosette for the first time
I’m using a Canon 600D unmodded in my 6” f6 newt and HEQ5 mount with PHD2 guiding
For acquisition, frame , focus and capture I use EQMOD, StellariumScope, Stellarium, BYEOS and PHD2
Anticipated Capture plan ISO 800 with 40 x 3 minute subs and 15 darks
Cheers

Nice image there Paul.

I personally like your second variation. I like the soft natural tones. We all have our own personal interpretations on the way we like to process. I wasn't overly fussed about going for rosette but seeing yours has made me want to give it a go. Thanks for the inspiration

Nice Rosette. Your starfield looks flat and very well corrected too.

That is an awesome effort. Star colors and field are fantastic. Great work with a DSLR.

I'd be happy with that!

Thanks all. Inside PixInsight arrived today as a late Christmas present, so time to delve right in.

Hi Martin, my setup is pretty well the same. Just switch out the newt, 600D and stellarium for a WO Star 71, 550D, Cartes de Ciel and AstroTortilla. I have also been working on a dark library with 32+ darks for these hotter temps.

Hey Jon, he certainly did a great job with DSLR.

When i was imaging that was my Camera of choice The Canon 5D, i loved it and it gave such fantastic wide fields

Keep it up, Paul ;)

Leon

Sorry for the hijack. People with frequently very expensive dedicated astro cameras probably don't like to hear it, but it is possible, given sufficient perseverance, and not a little talent, to produce images with a DSLR that are very fine, and almost indistinguishable from astro camera images. I remember that Sarah Wager used to produce stunning results in her early days of imaging with a DSLR, but unfortunately those early images don't seem to appear in her present gallery.
