Hi guys.
Since the change to .au, Mick has reported problems of the site being slow now, slower than it was before. Apparently the background takes 3 times longer to load than the content. Mick is on bigpond dialup.
I haven't noticed any difference at work or home, but both are on broadband connections.
Do any other dialup users notice any difference?
It would've had to have been re-cached due to the new domain name, so the first time visit would've been slower but I would've expected it to be just as quick from then on.
Anyone got any feedback or suggestions for Mick?
my dail-up at home is just as slow as it normally is... no real noticable change i am afraid.

My cache is auto deleted along with a lot of other stuff, every time I shut Firefox down. Haven't noticed much diff. in load times on dial-up.
Background is always the last to appear, due to it's size. I always think there's a problem with the site. Sometimes my browser 'times out' when first loading, but that's just because I load the smilies/members locations as well. :P L.
ps. Mick, how many pages are you loading as home? What browser, IE or what?
Done a bug sweep?
I have run vet and all is ok with the bugs I think. I'm running IE v6 on Xp. All other web pages I visit regularly seem to load as normal. I even defragged to see if that would help but that didn't help at all.
Thanks.

Used dial up last night to post my drawing. The background image was very slow to load initially but now its cached it is much faster.

I am using dialup atm, all seems to be fine. I have a 44.0Kbps connection. only pages i find slow are the ones with images, so i just open up a new tab when i want to look at those, and peruse the other part of the forum while waiting for them to download.

I'll see if I can reduce the size of the background image.

There have been some real problems since the switch to .au. I had many "server time-out"s after several minutes of nothing but perhaps a trickle coming through from the site. This never happened before the change.
I am on broadband (octopus cable).

These would not be caused by the switch to .au. It's still hosted on the same server, and the .com and .com.au simply route to the same space.

I have reduced the background image by half, it's now about 45k. I'll try and reduce it some more next week but i've ran out of time now.
Mick (or anyone else) let me know if it's any better. It'll be cached though, so you'll need to F5 or Ctrl-F5.

I have reduced the background image some more, it's now 27k. I can't get it any smaller without blurring it beyond recognition.. but if it's still slow for dialup users, i'll see what I can do. Once it's cached you shouldn't need to load it each time.
On the main homepage of IceInSpace, i've also removed one of the Sun images and moved some of the older news items to an archive area. In the near future i'll develop a method to access the news archives.
I'll continue to move some more old news items off the front page to ensure it loads as quick as possible. For the forum home page, I can't think of anything else that would cause a slow load.
Let me know how it is for you.
